John Legend recently opened up about his wife, Chrissy Teigen’s abortion in 2020, as he voiced his opposition to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which has led to abortion restrictions in several states. During an appearance on the Club Shay Shay podcast on October 23, Legend criticized governmental interference in deeply personal medical choices.
This election season, abortion remains a divisive issue. While conversing with podcast host Shannon Sharpe, Legend emphasized that decisions surrounding reproductive healthcare are best left to individuals rather than legislators, highlighting his concerns about Trump’s desire to take credit for the Roe v. Wade reversal.
“My wife was well past 15 weeks when she required an abortion. She was experiencing a miscarriage and was in danger of severe bleeding. For the government to assert, ‘Oh, we need to assess whether you’re dying enough to justify an abortion’ is outrageous,”he expressed.
The artist elaborated:
“That’s the narrative in states like Texas and Georgia, where strict abortion regulations are in place. They claim the government must decide whether you’re in critical condition before an abortion can be performed—not your healthcare provider or your family, but the government. They must remain uninvolved!”
His statements sparked a variety of reactions on social media. Critics of Legend accused him of misrepresenting the facts regarding abortion.
Pro-life advocates also challenged Legend’s claims, arguing that they contained misleading information.
“That’s not at all the reality… this story is a fabrication meant to mislead,”one user tweeted.
“These are false narratives aimed to mislead the public. They’ll exploit celebrities to do it,”another explained.
“He’s misguided. Ending Roe gives authority back to the states, which is where it belongs. You can choose to live in a more liberal or conservative area based on your beliefs,”someone else commented.
“This scenario doesn’t reflect the reality on the ground in any state. It’s misleading,”a different user wrote.
Conversely, pro-choice supporters resonated with John Legend’s perspective, advocating for women’s autonomy over their own choices.
“Thank you! Keep your hands off this deeply personal choice and stop trying to exert control over women. We are not your property!”one commented.
“I am a woman across these United States, but my rights vary from state to state,”another added.
“I’m infuriated by the ongoing mistreatment of women throughout America. If Alito were unwell, he wouldn’t be made to wait until he was close to death. I hope he is remembered as a corrupt and ineffective justice. Women should have their rights reinstated,”someone expressed.
John Legend and Chrissy Teigen’s Loss
John Legend and Chrissy Teigen experienced the tragic loss of their son, Jack, when Teigen was 20 weeks pregnant due to complications during pregnancy. Initially, they publicly described it as a miscarriage, but Teigen later clarified in 2022, during a panel at the “A Day of Unreasonable Conversation” summit, that she came to realize she had undergone an abortion in light of the Roe v. Wade decision.
Jack was their third child. During the 20th week, Teigen was hospitalized due to excessive bleeding and was diagnosed with “partial placental abruption,”a condition where the placenta detaches from the uterine wall. Her medical team informed her that inducing labor was necessary to save her life.
At the summit, Teigen recalled the heart-wrenching experience, stating she had to navigate many difficult decisions. They soon came to terms with the reality that their son could not survive and that continuing the pregnancy posed significant risks to her own health.
“Two years ago, while pregnant with Jack, my third child, I faced numerous difficult and painful choices. It became evident halfway through that he wouldn’t survive and that I wouldn’t either without medical assistance,” she shared.
Although they initially termed it a miscarriage, Teigen later recognized she had indeed experienced an abortion during a conversation with Legend about the implications of the Roe v. Wade reversal. She expressed frustration that it took her over a year to fully acknowledge this aspect of her story.
“I felt silence, troubled that I hadn’t processed it in this way sooner. I told everyone we had a miscarriage, and the world echoed that sentiment. I grew vexed that I hadn’t defined it accurately, and it frustrated me that it took so long for me to accept that we had an abortion,” she stated.
John Legend and Chrissy Teigen are the proud parents of four children: daughters Luna and Esti, and sons Miles and Wren.
