Following its release almost a year ago, Minecraft Legends will soon be available for PlayStation Plus members on April 2, 2024. This decision was announced by Mojang Studios in January, with the developer stating that while new downloadable content and game modes will no longer be added, multiplayer will still be fully functional.
Starting on April 2, 2024, players with a PlayStation Plus subscription that costs $9.99 or more per month will have the opportunity to play Minecraft Legends until May 6, 2024. This game will be added to the monthly rotation for April, alongside other titles such as Immortals of Aveum and Skul: The Hero Slayer.
The Pros and Cons of Minecraft Legends’ PlayStation Plus Release
Despite its arrival on PlayStation Plus being a great opportunity for players to try it out with friends, the inclusion of Minecraft Legends also serves as a sad reminder of the game’s decline. Only a year after its release, Mojang announced that they would no longer be creating new content for the game, possibly due to its low player count and reception.
Despite being deemed entertaining by the majority of review outlets, it seems that the new content and game modes of Minecraft Legends failed to retain a large portion of the player base. After just a few months since its 2023 release, the number of players had significantly decreased and the game now only sees an average of a few dozen active players, varying by platform.
Despite initially capturing the attention of fans with its campaign, co-op, and PvP modes, Minecraft Legends’ features did not seem to be sufficient in retaining players. The additional Lost Legends challenges, which introduced new gameplay options, also failed to provide the long-lasting appeal that Mojang had likely anticipated.
The addition of Legends to PlayStation Plus in April 2024 may attract more attention to the game. However, without any future updates, it is unlikely that most players will continue to play. This is disappointing for a game that originally generated a lot of hype among Minecraft fans, but it is important to remember that not every spin-off can replicate the success of the original game.
Despite the unlikely chance of this strategy game having a strong community in the future, it can still provide enjoyment for solo players or groups of friends. While the absence of fresh updates may be disappointing, the thrill of defeating piglin armies or engaging in PvP with other players can still be found for those seeking a break from the survival crafting aspect of the original game.
