Minecraft Joke mobs: Looking back at the ridiculous April Fools mobs
Minecraft is known for its yearly April Fools pranks, which include introducing playful and unconventional features that may not fit into the regular gameplay. A couple of noteworthy examples include the Ultimate Content Update’s infinite dimensions and the One Block at a Time Snapshot’s significant ramp-up in difficulty. Nevertheless, the joke mobs in the snapshots are arguably the most intriguing additions.
All of the joke mobs that have ever appeared in Minecraft are listed below, along with their distinguishing features from the game’s regular cast.
New Mobs in Minecraft Java Edition 2.0
Redstone glitch
Redstone bugs are essentially silverfish that have been reskinned with a redstone red color instead of their usual stone gray color. The only discernible difference between the two is their appearance, as their behavior and characteristics remain identical.
The name itself suggests their association with redstone. If a bug or error occurred within a redstone system, one of these creatures would appear on the spot of the error, highlighting the potential danger for unprepared engineers in Minecraft’s highly advanced farms and redstone builds.
Equines
Horses and ponies are considered to be among the most ill-fated mobs in Java Edition 2.0. Horses were essentially cows disguised in horse costumes with zippers, while ponies were pigs dressed in a similar manner. Although not officially introduced until the following update, Minecraft included these creatures as a reference to horses. However, the costumes were unsettling to behold.

The Pink Wither was a variation of the standard Wither boss, known as the most dangerous mob in Minecraft. These creatures were drawn to sugar and their strikes would heal harmed mobs instead of causing harm. Furthermore, their attacks had the ability to apply bone meal effects, allowing the Pink Wither to grow grass, flowers for creating dyes, and even crops planted by players.
The creatures would still have one head, but it would be adorned with sugar-growing heads, increasing the potency of their support abilities. Instead of using a series of wither skulls and soul sand, players could spawn one by using pink wool and a flower pot.
Exotic Poultry
Diamond chickens were an uncommon type of regular chickens that had a unique trait. Instead of having the usual white color, they were distinguished by their blue hue. Unlike regular chickens, diamond chickens had three possible outcomes when laying eggs: they could either explode, lay lapis lazuli, or lay diamonds.
Spreading Love and Kindness through Mobs
Grinning Creeper
Passive creepers were a variation of regular creepers that were known for their constant smiling. Unlike regular creepers, they did not cause any damage or destroy blocks when exploding. Instead, they would simply burst into poppies that players were unable to collect. As a result, they were more of a creepy annoyance rather than a true danger.
Despite being one of vanilla Minecraft’s most underdeveloped mobs, creepers have not received a major overhaul in years. As a result, the April Fools variants are both a blessing and a curse. While it is exciting to see Mojang’s creativity, it is also disappointing that the original creeper lacks any variations.
Romancing Golems
Love golems were essentially iron golems with a twist. They took over the role of iron golems as the mob that villagers would spawn, embodying the peaceful nature of the villagers. Unlike regular iron golems, they did not have the aggression to attack monsters or players. Instead, they roamed freely. Creating them followed the same process as creating iron golems.
The love golems had a distinct pink color and a large red heart emblazoned on their chests, setting them apart from typical metallic iron golems. However, unlike their counterparts, they did not drop iron, rendering them ineffective for use in Minecraft iron farms.
Recurring enemies
The previously mentioned Pink Wither, which was originally added with the Java Edition 2.0 snapshot, also made a second appearance in the Love and Hugs joke update. This is not unexpected, as its bright coloration and friendly appearance made it a perfect fit.
The Latest Mobs in The Vote Update
Realistic Rendering with Ray Tracing
Ray Tracing was a prank mob designed to resemble an extra player. In reference to the popular lighting technology in Minecraft, this mob was named after ray tracing. Its implementation included a “joined the world”announcement and a variety of customized idle, death, and despawn messages to further the illusion of an extra player.
One fascinating fact about Ray Tracing is that when the game’s language is set to French, the only phrase they can say is “Omelette du Fromage,”which is a nod to the same joke from Dexter’s Lab.
Galactic Bovine
A new addition to The Vote Update was the Moon Cow, which closely resembled a regular cow except for its presence in the update’s comical moon dimension. In contrast to their brown counterparts, Moon Cows were blue and wore glass helmets, and their unique feature was their inability to walk forward.
These mobs were known to drop various items such as glass bottles, regular glass, bones, or cheese upon death, making them valuable for farming. Their spawning was limited to the moon, which players could access by reaching above Y = 700 in the overworld.
The Mob of One Block at a Time
Exploring Mars
Mars was a distinctive canine found in the One Block at a Time April Fools snapshot. Unlike the recently introduced wolf variants in Minecraft 1.21, Mars could only be obtained by naming a tamed wolf “Mars”using a name tag. It was not possible to encounter this special creature by chance. With its dark brown coat, Mars bore the closest resemblance to the newly added woods wolf.
Upgraded Mob in 3D Shareware v1.34
Tech Enthusiast
The nerd creeper was just one of many joke creeper variations, and it closely resembled the smiling creeper. Players could activate the “NEEEERD”cheat code to naturally spawn these creepers, which were almost indistinguishable from the regular creepers except for their unique skin and a different item drop.
The latest addition to 3D Shareware v1.34 was a novelty item known as 3D, which could be used to make an image of the development team briefly appear on the screen.
