MindsEye Faces Sabotage Allegations Amidst Ongoing Struggles
MindsEye, criticized as the worst game of 2025 by Metacritic, has seen its developer, Build a Rocket Boy (BaRB), undertake major efforts to rectify the issues plaguing the game. Despite these initiatives, including a major update released recently, co-CEO Mark Gerhard claims that the game’s challenges extend beyond mere production failures.
According to an Insider-Gaming report, BaRB alleges to have uncovered evidence of a “coordinated campaign aimed at maliciously tarnishing Build a Rocket Boy’s reputation and eroding confidence in MindsEye.”The studio is actively collaborating with legal teams to address these serious claims.
Details of the Allegation
In a response to an inquiry from Insider-Gaming, BaRB indicated that during an internal meeting, Gerhard asserted that the studio has identified those believed to be behind the sabotage. Notably, he indicated that the operation had reportedly cost around €1 million (approximately $1.1 million USD).
Identifying the Perpetrators
The alleged culprits, as per the report, may be linked to a UK-based entity known as Ritual Network. This video network and influencer management company is said to have collaborated with various influencers, journalists, and even some former BaRB employees in this smear effort.
Gerhard disclosed that those implicated in the alleged sabotage will soon face criminal charges, including “espionage, sabotage, and criminal interference.” Emphasizing the gravity of the situation, he stated, “Everyone involved, including the endorsing company, will face serious consequences. This marks the beginning of our recovery.”
Ritual Network has denied any wrongdoing, asserting, “We are a creator support platform and have no connection to the claims made. We remain unaware of any legitimate legal action regarding these accusations, and any assertion linking Ritual Network to this matter is incorrect.”
A Shift in Strategy
Later in the meeting, Gerhard hinted at using the identities of those alleged to be behind the sabotage in an upcoming game concept, initially intended to involve Hitman’s Agent 47. However, that collaboration is no longer proceeding due to the end of a publishing agreement with IO Interactive. This adjustment allows BaRB to incorporate the purported saboteurs into the narrative instead.
“Let’s share our story with the community before it unfolds in court, ” Gerhard reportedly stated.“We are not merely victims; we’ve endured setbacks while reorganizing ourselves, and it’s time to actively respond. Ultimately, we are storytellers and game developers.”
The Aftermath of a Troubling Launch
The release of MindsEye was met with widespread disappointment last year, resulting in requests for refunds and acknowledging mass layoffs occurring shortly after launch. The studio expressed it was “heartbroken”by the initial failure and committed to making improvements to fulfill the game’s envisioned potential.
Co-CEO Leslie Benzies, a familiar name due to previous roles at Rockstar, also placed blame on both internal and external “saboteurs“for the turmoil. However, this narrative has been met with pushback from BaRB developers who expressed their grievances directly to Gerhard and Benzies in an open letter last October.
Voices from Within Grow Louder
In this letter, 93 developers criticized the leadership, highlighting a pattern of “disrespect and mistreatment.”They lamented, “We estimate that a significant portion of our colleagues, between 250-300 employees, have lost their jobs. This catastrophe resulted from leaders ignoring their seasoned workforce, leading to one of the decade’s worst game launches.”
The letter further described a work environment fraught with burnout, anxiety, and the downfall of a project that many devoted years to developing. The staff urged leadership to relinquish control and empower the remaining talented workers to guide the studio’s future.
Just over a week after this public plea, a BBC report corroborated internal discontent. Employees recounted how Gerhard and Benzies lacked clear direction, with concerns raised by the staff often dismissed or ridiculed.
Controversial Surveillance Practices
Additionally, the Insider report revealed that BaRB implemented a monitoring and cybersecurity software called Teramind to track employee behavior without their knowledge. Gerhard accepted full responsibility for how this software was deployed but hopes to have it removed within three months. He remarked, “Trust is vital in our business, and while we have a solid foundation, there’s always a risk from a small fraction of individuals.”
Looking Ahead: Possibilities and Critiques
If BaRB substantiates its claims of an organized sabotage effort, it would significantly alter the narrative surrounding MindsEye and potentially justifying the studio’s controversial decision to surveil its employees. Conversely, if no evidence turns up, this situation could further illustrate a pattern of mismanagement and blame-shifting resulting in lost jobs and a subpar product that disappointed countless players.
Reflecting on recent player feedback, some Steam users report positive experiences, citing enhancements in AI and fresh missions. However, others continue to voice discontent regarding persistent technical glitches, along with critiques of the game’s narrative, pacing, and overall variety—indicating that MindsEye’s problems extend beyond mere bugs and superficial fixes.
