MindsEye: A Performance Challenge on Unreal Engine 5

MindsEye, the latest title from Build a Rocket Boy, which was released this week on PC and major consoles, utilizes the advanced capabilities of Unreal Engine 5. However, players might encounter significant performance hurdles, as the game struggles to maintain a steady 60 FPS at 4K resolution. Achieving this performance level relies heavily on NVIDIA’s DLSS technology alongside Frame Generation, particularly when using one of the industry’s most powerful GPUs.

Performance Insights on High-End Hardware

A recent analysis conducted by MxBenchmarkPC provides insight into how MindsEye operates on an RTX 5080 across both 4K and 1440p settings. Despite the RTX 5080 being a competent GPU, the game’s demanding nature results in it barely reaching the 60 FPS threshold at 4K—this is only achievable when utilizing NVIDIA’s DLSS in Quality Mode combined with Frame Generation. Even with Multi Frame Generation enabled, players are required to compromise on performance for a smoother high refresh rate experience.

When testing at 1440p resolution, the performance slightly improves; however, it remains close to the 60 FPS mark, underscoring the challenging performance demands presented by MindsEye. Such results indicate that, aside from the exceptional RTX 5090, few GPUs are capable of delivering an optimal gaming experience at these resolutions in its current form.

Issues at Launch and Future Improvements

For those who closely watched the development of MindsEye, its launch was anticipated to be rocky. Just ahead of its release, two top executives from Build a Rocket Boy exited the company, raising concerns among fans. Players who received early access to console versions reported numerous bugs and performance issues, with the game’s major day one patch improving conditions only to a limited extent.

Availability

MindsEye is now accessible on various platforms, including PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S, making it available to a global audience eager to experience this ambitious title.
