Mike Florio pushes Ravens to add potential plan B for Lamar Jackson in 2024 NFL Draft
Despite Lamar Jackson signing a contract with the Ravens that will keep him on the team until 2027, NFL analyst Mike Florio believes the team should contemplate investing in a different quarterback. On “Pro Football Talk,”Florio presents his argument that Jackson’s injury record and advancing age should play a role in the team’s decision.
Florio asserted that Jackson’s playing style could potentially lead to him being sidelined in the future and that the current backup, Josh Johnson, may not be a suitable replacement. With Tyler Huntley no longer on the team, there is a need to identify a successor for Huntley in the backup position for Jackson in 2024.
“At some point, you got to develop somebody who can be your understudy to Lamar Jackson, because even though he was healthy all of last year, we’ve seen the history he plays with a physicality that can cause injuries,”Florio said.
“27 now, I want to use one of those nine picks on a developmental quarterback. That is my safety net, my insurance policy for Lamar Jackson, because I’m not comfortable with that being Josh Johnson. [00:01:52]”[43.9] PFT.
The analyst’s assessment was that the team’s nine picks in the NFL Draft would allow them to select a developmental quarterback in order to have another option to compete with Josh Johnson.
Naturally, selecting the player to draft would be a delicate balancing act for the Ravens. They must identify a top prospect who won’t attract negative attention from the media.
In light of this, it could be argued that in order to find a player capable of challenging Jackson, a top three-round pick would be necessary. Additionally, the player would need to be highly regarded in the draft.
Scouting for Future Stars: Lamar Jackson Prepares for the 2024 NFL Draft
Despite the fact that the Baltimore Ravens QB may not have any upcoming games for the next four months, his responsibilities have not disappeared entirely. As reported by ESPN through Sports Illustrated, the quarterback is actively involved in evaluating potential draft picks for the team, alongside John Harbaugh.
“He and I agree on a few guys. We haven’t disagreed on anybody yet. We’re sharing our vision together,”Harbaugh said.
In 2023, Lamar Jackson set a personal record by completing 67.2% of his passes and threw for a total of 24 touchdowns and only seven interceptions. He also proved to be a threat on the ground, rushing for 821 yards and scoring five touchdowns.
