Midnight Society Announces Closure Plans

Overview of Midnight Society’s Closure

  • Midnight Society announced its shutdown, putting an end to the development of Deadrop.
  • Dr. Disrespect was previously ousted from his position at the studio.
  • The studio is actively pursuing job placements for its development team.

Midnight Society, the gaming studio co-founded by prominent YouTube streamer Dr. Disrespect, recently disclosed its decision to cease operations. The development team was focused on a first-person extraction shooter titled Deadrop, which encountered considerable criticism primarily due to its controversial integration of NFTs. Compounded by earlier controversies involving Dr. Disrespect himself, the studio had initially reassured fans of its commitment to progress without the streamer.

Last year, allegations arose involving Dr. Disrespect and a former Twitch staff member claiming the streamer was banned from the platform for “sexting a minor”using the Whisper feature. While he did not directly refute the allegation, he admitted to sending inappropriate jokes to a minor. This scandal resulted in him losing numerous brand partnerships, facing demonetization on YouTube, and ultimately being removed from Midnight Society’s board of directors.

Despite Dr. Disrespect’s departure, Midnight Society had maintained its dedication to developing Deadrop, with many fans anticipating a release within the year. Although Dr. Disrespect had mentioned a possible launch for 2024, the game never materialized. Regrettably, Midnight Society disclosed on their social media channels that it would be closing down after three years of effort and would not be releasing Deadrop. In their statement, they expressed profound appreciation for the hard work of their developers and the community’s support. The studio is currently in search of other gaming companies to absorb its 55 developers.

Coincidental Timing of Midnight Society’s Closure

In the aftermath of the shutdown announcement, many gamers expressed a desire for Midnight Society to offer refunds to supporters of Deadrop and requested that the developer release the development build for the community to take over and complete the game. Additionally, some users noted the coincidental timing of the studio’s closure, which occurred on the same day that Dr. Disrespect was reportedly remonetized on YouTube. After several unsuccessful attempts to reverse his demonetization, he appears to have finally achieved this milestone.

While there is no direct evidence linking Midnight Society’s closure to Dr. Disrespect’s YouTube remonetization, the studio’s announcement came shortly after a report from Jake Lucky on Twitter. Dr. Disrespect himself confirmed this remonetization shortly after the studio’s news. It is unfortunate that the closure has resulted in job losses for several developers, and many hope these talented individuals will continue their careers in the gaming industry elsewhere.

On a related note, Dr. Disrespect has resumed streaming on YouTube, attracting thousands of viewers, and even ranked among the top streamers on the platform last October. He has yet to express his thoughts regarding Midnight Society’s dissolution and the cancellation of Deadrop, but there’s speculation that he may not have positive remarks to share.
