
Microsoft’s ambitious AI chip initiative appears to be encountering significant challenges, with the timeline for production now pushed back to 2026. Initial tests of the chip have also revealed that its performance may not be competitive.
Delays and Challenges Facing Microsoft’s “Braga”AI Chip Project
In response to NVIDIA’s dominant position in the AI sector, major technology companies, including Microsoft, have embarked on developing their own custom silicon. This attempt comes as companies like Google and Amazon have also ventured into producing in-house AI chips. Despite substantial investments—both financial and technical—Microsoft has yet to make significant breakthroughs in AI chip development. A recent report from The Information revealed that Microsoft’s AI chip project is facing a delay of up to six months, with early performance evaluations falling short of expectations.
The chip’s codename, “Braga, ”is now set to enter mass production by 2026, which constitutes a six-year delay. In addition to timeline setbacks, preliminary assessments indicate that Braga’s performance may not even match that of NVIDIA’s Blackwell architecture, launched in 2024. As a result, Microsoft’s new chip seems unlikely to rival NVIDIA’s offerings. The combination of high research and development expenses and multiple design revisions has contributed to this postponement.

The motivation behind Big Tech’s shift towards in-house AI chip production can be traced to the need to mitigate reliance on NVIDIA’s hardware, which has become highly sought after. While companies like Google and Amazon successfully utilize proprietary AI chips in their data centers, NVIDIA’s technology continues to lead the pack in terms of performance. Jensen Huang, the CEO of NVIDIA, has acknowledged the onset of competition from custom silicon but questions the rationale behind creating chips in-house when NVIDIA already excels in that domain.
Since their inception, Microsoft’s AI initiatives have witnessed considerable scaling back, reflecting a broader trend where the initial excitement surrounding AI has waned. As Microsoft navigates through these challenges in regard to its chip project, it will be intriguing to observe how they adapt and overcome these obstacles.
