The Iconic Sounds of Windows 95 and Minecraft Inducted into the Library of Congress
In a notable recognition of cultural significance, the reboot music from Windows 95 has been honored by the U. S.Library of Congress (LoC) as part of its National Recording Registry (NRR).This induction speaks to the broader appreciation of technology and nostalgia beyond just the tech-savvy audience.
The NRR includes recordings deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant, ”serving as a reflection of American life. Among the sounds now included is the Windows 95 startup theme, composed by the ambient music innovator Brian Eno. This category also features a diverse array of audio treasures, such as:
Elton John’s iconic album “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, ” Chicago’s inaugural release “Chicago Transit Authority, ” the original Broadway cast recording of “Hamilton, ” Mary J. Blige’s “My Life, ” Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black, ” along with Microsoft’s reboot chime and the music of Minecraft.
Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden highlighted 25 groundbreaking recordings, emphasizing their importance to the nation’s sound heritage.
The Significance of the Windows 95 Sound
The selection of the Windows 95 reboot theme is not arbitrary. The LoC praised it as a pivotal moment in the evolution of personal computing:
In the 1990s, the personal computing revolution began to take form, with Microsoft’s Windows 95 release in August 1995 marking a major milestone. This version emphasized a graphical user interface (GUI), democratizing technology for the average user. The startup sound was crafted to symbolize progress and accessibility, and Eno produced an inspiring ambient score that perfectly complemented this new era.
Brian Eno, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member and a pioneer in ambient music, contributed 84 sound elements that led to the final piece—a slightly longer piece than originally requested, designed to evoke feelings of welcome and optimism.

Minecraft’s Volume Alpha Also Recognized
Alongside Windows 95, the soundtrack of Minecraft, created by Daniel Rosenfeld (alias C418), has also been inducted into the National Recording Registry. Since its launch in 2011, Minecraft’s music has played a fundamental role in establishing the game as a cultural landmark:
The soothing ambient soundtrack is perfectly suited for Minecraft’s exploratory gameplay, allowing players to immerse themselves in an open-world environment without any narrative constraints. Inspired by musicians like Aphex Twin, C418’s score not only enhances the gaming experience but has also foreshadowed the rise of similar musical styles, such as the lo-fi hip-hop trend of the late 2010s.
