Microsoft’s August 2025 Security Update: SSD Issues Under Scrutiny
This month, Microsoft rolled out its August 2025 security update for both Windows 10 and Windows 11. Shortly after the update’s launch, alarming reports surfaced regarding potential malfunctions of SSDs and data corruption linked to these updates. Microsoft addressed these claims and assured users that they were investigating the situation. Recently, however, the company has shifted responsibility, asserting that Windows 11 is not implicated in these problems.
Official Statement from Microsoft
On the Admin Portal, Microsoft provided an update regarding their findings:
After thorough investigation, Microsoft has found no connection between the August 2025 Windows security update and the types of hard drive failures reported on social media. As always, we continue to monitor feedback after the release of every Windows update and will investigate any future reports.
Phison’s Insights into the Issue
Interestingly, Microsoft is not alone in asserting that the issues might not stem from the August update. Phison, a leading manufacturer of SSD controllers, recently released their own findings. They conducted extensive testing and confirmed:
Phison dedicated over 4, 500 cumulative testing hours to the drives reported as potentially impacted and conducted more than 2, 200 test cycles. We were unable to reproduce the reported issue, and no partners or customers have reported that the issue affected their drives at this time.
Recommendations for Affected Users
While the investigation continues, it’s advisable for users who have installed the August 2025 update to exercise caution with their SSDs. Moderation in file usage may help mitigate potential risks. For those yet to install the update, consider pausing Windows Update until further information is provided by Microsoft.
Additional Ongoing Issues
As Microsoft tackles the SSD dilemma, other technical challenges also loom. The company has confirmed performance issues concerning NDI streaming following the installation of the August 2025 update, indicating there are more problems requiring attention.
