In line with its commitment to improving device management, Microsoft has announced the upcoming general availability of the Windows Backup for Organizations feature via Intune. Set to launch next month, this feature coincides with the impending end of support for Windows 10, providing IT and system administrators with an efficient tool for device management.

As highlighted on the Microsoft 365 (M365) roadmap website, this update promises to streamline the backup and restore processes during the Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE), especially beneficial for enterprises transitioning to Windows 11.

Requirements for Implementation

To ensure successful availability and functionality of the Backup App, organizations must meet the following requirements:

  • Devices must be either Microsoft Entra joined or hybrid joined.
  • Running a supported version, specifically Windows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 11 version 22H2 or later.
  • Eligible devices should have the August 2025 Windows security update or a more recent update installed. This includes the Windows Backup app for maintaining Windows settings and the list of Microsoft Store apps.
  • Backup policies need to be enacted through mobile device management (MDM) or Group Policy.

For those looking to restore settings and Microsoft Store apps, the following conditions apply:

  • Devices must be Microsoft Entra joined.
  • They should be operating on Windows 11 version 22H2 or newer.
  • Preprovisioning of devices should occur with the August 2025 Windows security update before users engage in the Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE).Alternatively, they should run the base OS versions during OOBE as follows: Windows 11 version 22H2 build 22621.3958 or newer; Windows 11 version 23H2 build 22631.3958 or newer; or Windows 11 version 24H2 build 26100.1301 or newer.
