Microsoft Weekly: a new Windows head, a redesigned Start menu, and a leaked Xbox Series X

This edition of Microsoft Weekly covers a busy week filled with Microsoft-related updates. These include the appointment of a new Windows leader, a revamped Start menu in the latest Windows 11 preview builds, leaked images of a potential new Xbox Series X, cancelled Edge updates, and several updates to various apps.

Windows 10 and 11

Here we talk about everything happening around Microsoft’s latest operating system in the Stable channel and preview builds: new features, removed features, controversies, bugs, interesting findings, and more. And of course, you may find a word or two about older but still supported versions.

This month’s optional non-security updates have been released, and they include some major ones. Windows 11 has received KB5035942, which brings the Moment 5 Update and its features to all users. Additionally, Windows 10 has received KB5035941, which also introduces new features such as lock screen widgets and Windows Spotlight for desktop backgrounds. However, if you choose to skip these updates, you can still get the updated lock screen and other new features as part of the April 2024 Patch Tuesday updates.

Microsoft has recently released a detailed blog post explaining how IT Admins can now access optional updates on managed devices at a faster rate, in addition to the latest non-security updates. This is a change from the previous limitation of only being able to expedite security updates.

This week, Microsoft announced that it has appointed Pavan Davuluri as the new leader of both Windows and Surface divisions, bringing them together under one leadership. Pavan had previously taken on the role of Surface head six months ago, when Panos Panay left Microsoft for Amazon. With his expanded responsibilities, Pavan will now also be in charge of the Windows department. Meanwhile, Mikhail Parakhin, the current Bing boss, will be stepping down from his position to explore other opportunities within Microsoft.

The POPCNT instruction, known for causing issues, once again caused trouble as it affected Windows Terminal. However, a prompt response from a Microsoft engineer promptly disproved any speculation of the company deliberately blocking older systems. The root of the issue was a compiler bug in MSVC 19.38, causing the CPUID instruction output to be misinterpreted.

Similarly, you can revive the original Notepad, which will soon become the primary text editor on Windows 11. According to Microsoft, WordPad will be removed from the operating system in Windows 11 version 24H2.

The latest release of the Beta Channel introduced a surprisingly extensive range of features. While Microsoft acknowledged some of them publicly, there are others that are still in development. A notable improvement is the fixed address bar in File Explorer, which now enables users to easily drag files and folders. Additionally, the Share dialog will include a built-in QR code generator, and the widgets button on the taskbar has been relocated.

Good news for some of you! Microsoft is currently in the process of revamping the “All apps”list. A feature ID was recently discovered, allowing users to easily switch from the list to a grid view. For more information on how to access this feature, check out this article. However, it’s important to note that the current version is still a work in progress, which is why Microsoft has not yet officially announced it.

The recent release of build 26090 in the Dev and Canary Channels has an exciting feature – the absence of the watermark in the bottom-right corner of the screen. This was removed by Microsoft in anticipation of the upcoming version 24H2 release.

Latest Updates

This section covers software, firmware, and other notable updates (released and coming soon) delivering new features, security fixes, improvements, patches, and more from Microsoft and third parties.

Following its release in the Stable Channel, Microsoft Edge had an eventful week. Users quickly discovered the addition of a Microsoft Copilot app after updating to version 123. Despite not being currently accessible, Microsoft explained that the app would support upcoming Copilot experiences. However, due to potential compatibility concerns, Edge 123 was temporarily removed from the Stable Channel a few days later. The update was then re-released on March 27 with additional fixes and security updates.

If you are concerned about Microsoft Edge using excessive amounts of RAM, you will be pleased to learn that Microsoft is developing a feature that will allow you to set a limit on the maximum amount of memory the browser can use. This feature is currently being released to Edge Insiders in the Canary Channel, and you can find more information about it here.

Microsoft Teams for personal use is undergoing a redesign, with Teams Insiders on Windows 11 now able to experience the updated UI. This revamped design includes larger avatars, expanded reaction options, increased spacing between elements, improved materials, and other design improvements. The Teams Insider program is available to all, allowing you to sign up if waiting for the official release is not feasible.

In addition, Microsoft has recently introduced a significant feature update for OneDrive, available to subscribers of Microsoft 365 Basic. This tier, priced at $1.99 per month, now offers ransomware detection and protection, as well as unlimited storage for files in Personal Vaults. Additionally, users can now utilize password-protected and expiring links, as well as access offline folders on their mobile devices.

After much anticipation, Chrome has now become one of the ARM64-native browsers available on Windows. Google has fulfilled its promise by releasing a version of its browser for Windows on ARM, just in time for the upcoming launch of the first Snapdragon X Elite-powered PCs. This update aims to provide users with improved performance and energy efficiency.

When it comes to Chrome, the browser is set to improve font display on Windows in the near future. According to a page on the Chrome Platform Status, Google and Microsoft are collaborating to integrate the Skia text engine with the ability to adapt to ClearType settings, adjusting text contrast and gamma. Currently, the only Chromium browser that supports ClearType settings on Windows 10 and 11 is Microsoft Edge, which introduced the feature approximately three years ago.

Ultimately, Intel revealed the specifications for “AI PCs”as outlined by Microsoft, set to hit stores within the next few months. It was discovered that having a designated Copilot hardware key is a requirement for Microsoft to classify a computer as an “AI PC.”

Additional noteworthy updates are as follows:

  • The Windows Microsoft Store app now includes a new section for monitoring updates and new additions.
  • The integration of Microsoft Designer was implemented on the Microsoft 365 mobile app for both Android and iOS platforms.
  • An updated timeline for SecureBoot DC hardening was published by Microsoft.
  • Microsoft Teams users will soon have access to new Copilot features.
  • On May 14, 2024, Microsoft will discontinue support for. NET 7.
  • The Dev Channel has released the latest version of Microsoft Edge, 124.0.2478.6.
  • The Beta Channel now offers the availability of Microsoft Edge 124.
  • The Microsoft Store now offers Dropbox as an available option.
  • The firmware update for March 2024 was applied to the Surface Pro 9 5G.
  • A Copilot plugin is being added to the Microsoft Photos app.
  • The Options Plus app from Logitech now includes Smart Actions for Copilot and added support for keyboards and mice.
  • AtlasOS developers pitched improved latency and game performance in their “Windows alternative.”

  • The latest version of Intel Game On WHQL, 31.0.101.5382, includes updates for Horizon Forbidden West and other fixes.

The most recent installment of Microsoft 365 Roadmap Weekly is now available, continuing to highlight the latest updates to the Microsoft 365 Roadmap website. This week’s additions include enhanced security features for Outlook administrators, a new method for accessing hidden files on OneDrive through the web, and other developments.

Gaming Industry Trends

The gaming section for this week is headlined by a major leak of the Xbox Series X. Images of the highly anticipated white edition without an optical drive were leaked, reminiscent of Microsoft’s previous efforts to release a disc-less version of their console in order to make it more accessible to a wider range of gamers. As the leak has not yet been officially confirmed, it should be approached with caution.

Obsidian Entertainment’s Grounded will soon be receiving its final update with new free content. Set to release on April 16, the game will introduce a new boss creature, as well as a New Game+ mode and various enhancements. Additionally, Grounded will also be making its way to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch on the same day.

“The “Horizon Race-Off”update, recently released for Forza Horizon 5, is the latest addition to Microsoft’s lineup of first-party titles. This free update includes six exclusive cars, new props for Event Lab, and a pack of premium vehicles for players to enjoy. With the series in full swing, make sure to join in and unlock new additions to the Forza franchise such as the 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R and the 2024 Ford Mustang GT.”

Bethesda Game Studios, a studio also owned by Microsoft, provided a subtle indication of their work on Elder Scrolls VI. The company expressed that creating a new installment in Tamriel’s story continues to bring them “the same happiness, enthusiasm, and potential for exploration.”

Despite the recent attention on Apple in the EU, Microsoft’s gaming executive discussed the possibility of other marketplaces on Xbox. In a Polygon interview, Phil Spencer acknowledged that this is not entirely out of the question. He also shared his thoughts on the potential of an Xbox-branded handheld console in the same interview.

As part of the Xbox Insiders program, users have the opportunity to test out keyboard and mouse compatibility on Cloud Gaming. A select few Xbox games, including Fortnite, Sea of Thieves, Halo Infinite, and more, now offer the ability to play with a mouse and keyboard while streaming.

To this day, it remains unchanged and is still utilized in the newest iteration of the operating system, Windows 11.
