Microsoft Updates Methods to Enable/Disable New Outlook for Windows and Outlook on the Web

Microsoft frequently updates its roadmap to showcase forthcoming changes to Microsoft 365, where new features undergo testing prior to widespread implementation. Nonetheless, certain modifications bypass the testing phase and are instead announced directly through the Microsoft 365 Message Center, ensuring that IT and system administrators stay informed. A significant update set to affect Outlook is on the horizon.

The technology leader has announced that the “OWAEnabled“policy parameter will no longer be utilized; only “OneWinNativeOutlookEnabled“will be utilized to access mailboxes moving forward.

For those unfamiliar with this context, the previous verification of the OWAEnabled parameter indicated that the Outlook Web App (previously known as OWA) would be enabled by default. Therefore, the removal of this verification changes that status.

The implementation of this update is slated to commence in late January 2025, with a target completion by mid-February 2025. The official communication states:

We are modifying the method for enabling or disabling the new Microsoft Outlook for Windows and Microsoft Outlook for the web.

[Timeline for the change:]

General Availability (Worldwide, GCC): The rollout is expected to start in late January 2025 and conclude by mid-February 2025.

[Implications for your organization:]

This adjustment will refine the OWAEnabled parameter to exclusively control access to user mailboxes through Outlook for the web (formerly Outlook Web App), thereby ensuring that it does not influence the operations of the new Outlook for Windows.

You can manage access to the new Outlook for Windows utilizing the OneWinNativeOutlookEnabled policy.

This message is triggered by our data that suggests one or more users within your organization are likely utilizing the New Outlook for Windows.

[Preparation steps needed:]

The implementation of this rollout will occur automatically on the designated date without requiring prior action from administrators. It is advisable to review your existing settings to evaluate the impact on your organization. You may wish to inform your administrators about this transition and refresh any pertinent documentation.

Once this change is effective, please verify the status of the OneWinNativeOutlookEnabled policy for each mailbox. The default setting is Enabled.

The update can be found in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center under message ID MC922623 (courtesy of Modern Workspace Pro).
