Microsoft Unveils New Windows 11 Migration Tool Similar to Windows 7 Easy Transfer

In 2025, the adage “what is old is new again”resonates strongly, particularly regarding Microsoft’s initiatives. Recently, Windows Latest highlighted that Microsoft is actively testing a new “PC-to-PC migration” feature applicable to both Windows 11 and Windows 10. Although the company previously rolled out a migration tool to users, there were significant functionality issues. However, fresh insights are now available through a newly released support document.

The support document, first noted by Windows Latest, details a revamped migration process for Windows 11 and 10 users. While this feature’s arrival was anticipated, it marks the first instance where Microsoft has officially shared comprehensive information. This tool enables users to connect two PCs over a local network, facilitating the transfer of files from an older device to a newer one.

This new migration approach resembles the functionality of Windows Easy Transfer, a feature that debuted with Windows Vista and Windows 7, which was widely acknowledged for its efficiency in migrating files. However, as newer Windows versions emerged, Microsoft phased out Windows Easy Transfer, opting to promote OneDrive as the go-to solution for file transfers. While OneDrive serves its purpose, many users found it lacking as a comprehensive alternative for file migration.

The upcoming migration tool promises to streamline the transfer of essential documents, photos, and personal configurations across home networks. Microsoft has clarified that while applications and passwords will not be included in the migration, users can easily restore their applications from the library and passwords via their Microsoft account, especially if synchronized with OneDrive.

Understanding Windows 11’s New PC-to-PC File Transfer Feature

To initiate the transfer process, start by launching the Windows backup application on your old PC. Select “Transfer information to a new PC”, and if everything is configured correctly, your old PC will display its name (e.g., DESKTOP‑Surface7).The new PC will prompt you to input this name, moving both devices to the subsequent step once entered.

A six-digit code will then appear on your new PC, functioning similarly to standard Bluetooth pairing codes. It’s crucial to note that the transfer occurs over your wired or wireless network and not via Bluetooth.

Once the two PCs are paired, a checklist of folders and their respective sizes is presented, allowing you to select which items to transfer. You have the option to deselect larger files if your new PC has limited storage. After finalizing your selections, clicking “Start transfer”will commence the data copying process via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Progress can be monitored during the transfer—illustrated by estimates such as “89 GB of 118 GB transferred”and “15 minutes remaining.”Should there be a temporary network disruption, Windows will pause the transfer and resume automatically once connectivity is restored.

Upon completion, Windows will provide a summary of the migration and guide users through the remaining setup in the Out of Box Experience (OOBE).

It’s worth mentioning that this data migration process requires a Microsoft account on both PCs to function properly, ensuring a seamless transfer experience.
