Outlook Lite: A Lightweight Mobile Solution
In July 2022, Microsoft embarked on developing Outlook “Lite, ”a streamlined version of its mobile email application aimed at users needing faster performance without compromising essential functionalities. Upon its release the following month, this app demonstrated an impressive initial size of just 5 MB, although it has now grown to approximately 7.5 MB. This compact size translated into advantages such as rapid performance, minimized battery consumption, and seamless operation across various network conditions.
Success Story: From Launch to Retirement
The adoption of Outlook Lite proved remarkable, accumulating over five million downloads by November 2023, with that figure effectively doubling to ten million by August 2024. Its appeal lay in its ability to provide a quick, efficient email experience tailored for lighter devices.
End of an Era: Outlook Lite to Be Retired
Regrettably for its loyal users, Microsoft has recently announced the impending retirement of Outlook Lite. This decision marks the third significant app depreciation from the tech giant, following similar announcements regarding the Microsoft Editor browser add-on and Microsoft Lens.
The schedule for phasing out Outlook Lite is set to begin on October 6, 2025. After this date, new installations will be prohibited, although current users will have the ability to continue using the app for a limited time prior to its full discontinuation.
Transitioning to Outlook Mobile
In light of this change, Microsoft encourages users to transition to the standard Outlook Mobile app. To facilitate this, the company has outlined simple steps for a seamless migration:
To continue enjoying a secure and feature-rich email experience, we recommend switching to Outlook Mobile. Here’s how to get started:
