Alongside the release of two new preview builds for Windows 11—one targeting the Beta Channel and the other for the Dev Channel—Microsoft has also introduced a significant update for the Snipping Tool app. This update is accessible to Windows Insiders within the Dev and Beta Channels.
The updated version, 11.2409.22.0, brings a noteworthy new feature: the ability to copy data tables. Users can take a screenshot of a table, click on the “Text Actions”button, and select “Copy as Table.”This functionality will allow you to transfer data in a well-organized format, enabling seamless pasting into applications like Excel or other table-processing software.
Here’s what was officially announced:
We’re rolling out an update for the Snipping Tool (version 11.2409.22.0 or later) for Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels, adding a new “Copy as table” capability.
Users now have extended functionalities with Snipping Tool! In addition to established text options like extracting text from images and redacting sensitive content, we are introducing the “Copy as table” feature. This allows users to effortlessly copy structured table data into an email, document, or spreadsheet. To utilize this feature, simply capture a screenshot containing table data, access “Text actions,” and choose “Copy as table.” You can then paste the organized table data wherever needed!
Keep in mind that the feature is optimized for situations where your screenshot features only a single table.
It’s important to highlight that while downloading and installing the latest Snipping Tool update on a stable version of Windows 11 is feasible through third-party tools that generate links from the Microsoft Store, the new table copying function may not be available yet. Thus, the most effective strategy is to use the app on a device that is enrolled in the Windows Insider Program, either through the Dev Channel or the Canary Channel.
