Microsoft PowerToys: Upcoming UI Enhancements with Fluent Design
Microsoft has been diligently working to refresh the user interface (UI) of PowerToys, aligning it with the Fluent design language that characterizes Windows 11. This effort aims to ensure a seamless integration of PowerToys features, further enriching the overall user experience.
Proposed UI Changes for Enhanced User Experience
In 2022, Niels Laute, a Microsoft engineer focused on WinUI and PowerToys, shared insightful suggestions for the UI redesign. He emphasized the importance of creating a more cohesive look and feel within the PowerToys ecosystem to resonate with Windows 11 aesthetics:
Windows 11 introduces a new direction of Fluent Design – it would be great if all PowerToys features would look and feel native to the OS. WinUI 3 should make this an easy transition. Some things that come to mind:
- General enhancements for a streamlined experience.
- Integration of remap key and shortcut functionalities into a unified “Keyboard Manager”.
- Option to temporarily enable or disable certain remappings.
- Adoption of WinUI 3 for default Windows 11 styling.
- Improvement of accessibility by using standardized UI elements and colors.
- Support for modern input methods such as touch and pen.
Addressing User Feedback and Anticipation
Laute indicated that these proposed UI changes would mitigate numerous issues users have encountered. In January of last year, Microsoft unveiled a mockup of the revamped Keyboard Manager. However, over a year later, the company continues to seek community feedback, indicating that further refinements are necessary before finalizing the project.
Call for Community Input from Microsoft Leaders
Recently, Kayla Cinnamon, a Senior Product Manager for PowerToys and Windows Developer experiences, reached out to the community via her official X account:
