Microsoft Announces Shutdown of Xbox Avatar Editor

Initially introduced in 2016 as an enhancement of the Xbox 360 avatars, the next-generation Xbox avatars made their debut in 2018. These avatars offered users a significantly enhanced level of customization, including options for accessibility such as avatars in wheelchairs, facilitated through the official Avatar Editor app. However, Microsoft recently confirmed that this entire system will soon be discontinued.

Low Engagement Leads to Avatar App Closure

In a recent support document, Microsoft announced the upcoming termination of the Xbox Avatar Editor, attributing the decision to low user engagement. The official shutdown is planned for January 9, 2025, impacting both the Xbox Avatar Editor app on consoles and its availability on PC.

Microsoft’s Commitment to Player Experience

In the FAQ addressing this change, Microsoft stated, “We are committed to providing exceptional experiences for gamers, including a range of options for personalizing their gaming journey on Xbox.” The company emphasized that due to low usage and their strategic redirection toward other player engagement avenues, the Avatar Editor will be phased out starting early next year.

Refunds for Customization Purchases

To accommodate users who have made purchases in the Avatar Editor shop, Microsoft will provide refunds. Purchases made between November 1, 2023, and January 9, 2025, will be automatically refunded following the app’s shutdown.

Ongoing Personalization Options

Despite the upcoming changes, players will still have options to personalize their gaming experiences. Microsoft mentioned that users can utilize dynamic backgrounds and profile colors on Xbox consoles, as well as access Xbox Original Avatars, profile themes, and gamer pictures on both consoles and PCs.

Original Xbox 360 Avatars Remain Untouched

Notably, the original Xbox 360 avatars and associated applications will remain unaffected by this transition. Users looking for alternative methods to create custom gamer pictures can download the Xbox Original Avatars app available on consoles and PCs, allowing continued use of its features.
