Microsoft Reveals Upcoming Customization Options for Windows 11 Start Menu Following User Feedback

Following years of user feedback and criticism, Microsoft is set to enhance customization features for the Start menu in Windows 11.

Having utilized the Start menu for six months, I find it functional, yet I am not entirely satisfied with its appearance, which can dominate the screen unless I adjust my display settings. Additionally, the inability to modify the pre-set categories generated by Windows adds to my frustration.

Fortunately, there’s promising news on the horizon, as Microsoft has announced they are actively developing new options for Start menu customization.

Recently, Windows Latest shared that Microsoft tested at least five distinct designs for the Start menu. This information garnered considerable attention across social media platforms. Subsequently, Microsoft’s design team unveiled additional insights into several experimental Start menu concepts that never progressed to public release.

A Detailed Look at Experimental Start Menu Designs

In a recent post on X, March Rogers, Microsoft’s Partner Director of Design, confirmed enhancements for the Start menu are underway, sharing insights into the concepts being developed.

Rogers emphasized that the new design would incorporate significant customization options, creating a more user-friendly experience aimed at accessing applications more efficiently. In his own words, “Some behind-the-scenes info on the new Start menu design. We listened to customers and made it easier to get to your apps. We’re working on additional customization options right now.”

The Current Challenges of Customizing the Start Menu

At present, customizing the Start menu poses challenges for users, particularly following the introduction of the recent Categories layout, which has generated dissatisfaction among many.

One notable post highlighting user feedback has gained traction, calling for the ability to modify the grouping of apps into categories. One concerned user articulated the need for personal definition of categories, arguing that the absence of customization leads to a disorganized interface.

“Normally, such a feature proposal would be reviewed by someone familiar with user-interface design who has the ability to anticipate typical use cases. It is shocking that this made it to production in its current state.”

This perspective underscores the frustrations users feel, especially regarding the automatic categorization process. The current feature relies on a 15MB JSON file to classify applications within predefined groupings without connecting to Microsoft’s servers.

The JSON structure is designed to categorize applications into groups like Entertainment, Social, and Creativity. However, inaccuracies in app identification can leave some applications misclassified under the ‘Others’ category, resulting in a cluttered experience.

Looking ahead, if Microsoft proceeds with new customization options, we might finally see improved control over the Categories layout.

Additionally, Microsoft has started to allow users to disable one of the less popular recommendations features in the Start menu, signaling that further refinements are likely imminent.

Notably, the improvements extend beyond mere customization. Microsoft has also confirmed its decision to transition the Start menu framework from React Native to WinUI, which is anticipated to enhance performance and reduce latency.
