Recently, Microsoft identified a bug linked to a Windows 10 update that caused users to encounter an “0x80070643 – ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE”message. This error occurred when users attempted to install a WinRE update while another update was in a pending reboot state. Initially, the company advised affected users to disregard the issue. Now, there’s a more effective solution available.

Official Update from Microsoft

Microsoft has enhanced its official support documentation regarding the 0x80070643 error. As of April 21, 2025, they confirmed that this issue is resolved. Users who install update KB5057589 after 2 PM PT on that date will no longer experience the error. For those who have previously installed this update, it will not be presented for reinstallation. Thus, if you are using Windows 10, no further action is required. However, you can verify the status of your update by using the DISM /Online /Get-Packages command.

If you install KB5057589 after 2 PM PT on April 21, 2025, you will not observe the incorrect error message about the install failure. If you have already installed this update, you will not see this update offered again and can check the status of this update with the Dism /Online /Get-Packages command.

Scope of the Issue

This problem primarily impacted Windows 10 versions 22H2, 21H2, and Windows Server 2022. Notably, Windows 11 versions—both client and server—did not face any related complications.

Upcoming Changes to Windows 10 Support

It’s essential to note that mainstream support for Windows 10 is set to conclude on October 14, 2025. Microsoft is strongly encouraging users of eligible devices to upgrade to Windows 11, which offers enhanced features and improved security protocols. Users with devices that are no longer supported are advised to consider recycling their machines and investing in new PCs.
