Microsoft resolves PowerToys installation issues in latest v0.94.2 update

Microsoft PowerToys Update: Version 0.94.2 Released

Microsoft has rolled out an important update for PowerToys, now available for download as version 0.94.2. This update specifically targets an installation issue that emerged following the previous update. Just days ago, version 0.94.1 addressed a related bug, yet users continued to experience installation difficulties. The new iteration aims to resolve errors encountered when using various installation sources, including GitHub, winget, and the Microsoft Store.

Addressing Installation Issues

As highlighted in recent reports from GitHub, users attempting to install PowerToys 0.94 may have faced a frustrating bootstrapper error message: Failed to load SilentFilesInUseBAFunction.dll (0x8007007e). This issue arose irrespective of whether the installation was performed with administrative rights or not. While version 0.94.1 did not rectify this issue, the current update—0.94.2—provides a much-needed fix, as detailed in the updated changelog:

  • #41853 – Installer: Fixed the missing vcruntime dependency error that blocked installations and caused the “Failed to load SilentFilesInUseBAFunction.dll (0x8007007e)” bootstrapper failure, restoring successful installs from GitHub, winget, and the Microsoft Store.

New Features and Improvements

In addition to resolving the installation issues, PowerToys 0.94.2 introduces several enhancements for users. The latest version includes a dedicated search bar, enabling users to quickly locate settings and modules. Furthermore, a new shortcut conflict detector has been added to help users manage multiple actions assigned to a single shortcut. Another noteworthy improvement is the gliding cursor mode for Mouse Pointer Crosshairs, which enhances accessibility for users.

What’s Next for PowerToys?

While the 0.94 release may not boast the most extensive set of features, developers are gearing up for PowerToys 0.95, promising significant updates. Among the anticipated changes are a new module for automatic theme switching in Windows 11 according to user schedules and a completely redesigned user interface for the Keyboard Manager.

How to Download PowerToys 0.94.2

You can download PowerToys version 0.94.2 directly from GitHub or via the Microsoft Store. Alternatively, you can also install it using Windows Terminal with the following command: winget install Microsoft. PowerToys -s winget.
