Important Update: Windows 10 Support Transition and Extended Security Updates (ESU)
The Indian government has recently issued an alert regarding the impending conclusion of support for Windows 10, scheduled to take effect in approximately four months. Coinciding with this announcement, Microsoft unveiled a significant development: the introduction of complementary enrollment options allowing users to extend their support for an additional year without incurring extra expenses.
Streamlined ESU Setup with New Tools
To facilitate this transition, Microsoft has launched a user-friendly tool designed to simplify the setup process for Extended Security Updates (ESU).This tool, depicted in the image below, aims to assist both IT professionals and end-users in navigating the enrollment process.
Key Prerequisites for ESU Enrollment
Microsoft has outlined several essential prerequisites for those seeking access to Windows 10 Extended Security Updates:
- The device must be running Windows 10 version 22H2 or later, specifically with the November 2024 Patch, KB5046613.
- The machine must have connectivity to the necessary network endpoints to enable client activation.
- Administrative privileges are required for the activation process on the device.
Validation and Activation Process
Included in the guide are various PowerShell scripts intended for IT and system administrators. One notable script, Check-Win10ESUPrereq.ps1
, serves as a validation tool to confirm that the device meets the necessary version and patch criteria while ensuring communication with the requisite network endpoints. This script is invaluable for troubleshooting any issues related to the required prerequisites.
Upon successful validation, users can proceed with ESU key activation through one of two methods:
- Using Remediation Scanning and Activation scripts, namely
Win10ESUActivation-detect.ps1
for detection andWin10ESUActivation-remediate.ps1
for remediation. - Employing Win32 Application scripts, which include
Win10ESU-install.ps1
for installation andWin10ESU-detection.ps1
for detection.
During the remediation phase, Microsoft has indicated that “some licensing considerations”may limit options for smaller enterprises.
Activation IDs for Manual Verification
For manual verification of volume activation information, Microsoft has also provided the following Activation IDs:
- Win10 ESU Year 1: f520e45e-7413-4a34-a497-d2765967d094
- Win10 ESU Year 2: 1043add5-23b1-4afb-9a0f-64343c8f3f8d
- Win10 ESU Year 3: 83d49986-add3-41d7-ba33-87c7bfb5c0fb
