Microsoft’s Latest Windows Updates: KB5050094 and Associated Dynamic Updates

This week, Microsoft unveiled the KB5050094, an optional non-security preview update for Windows 11 version 24H2. In addition to this, the tech giant rolled out several related dynamic updates, reviving its efforts following the absence of Setup updates for both Windows 10 and Windows 11 in December. Importantly, these updates include enhancements for the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), commonly referred to as the Safe OS update.

Overview of Dynamic Updates

The newly released dynamic updates are applicable to Windows Server 2025 as well. Microsoft has outlined the specifics of these updates:

KB5050758: Setup Dynamic Update for Windows 11, version 24H2 and Windows Server 2025: January 28, 2025

Summary

This update enhances the Windows setup binaries and files that are crucial for implementing feature updates in Windows 11, version 24H2, and Windows Server 2025.

KB5053117: Safe OS Dynamic Update for Windows 11, version 24H2 and Windows Server 2025: January 28, 2025

Summary

This update brings improvements to the Windows Recovery Environment for Windows 11, version 24H2, and Windows Server 2025.

Understanding Dynamic Update Packages

For users unfamiliar with these updates, Dynamic Update packages are designed to be integrated with existing Windows images before their deployment. Microsoft provided a detailed explanation in a Tech Community blog post focusing on Windows 10 Dynamic Updates. These packages serve a variety of functions, including crucial fixes to Setup.exe binaries and updates for the Safe OS:

As soon as a Windows 10 feature update begins—whether initiated from media or a Windows Update service—Dynamic Update is triggered. The Windows 10 Setup connects to a Microsoft-hosted internet URL to retrieve Dynamic Update content, which is then applied to the operating system installation media.

Acquired content includes:

  • Setup Updates: Fixes for Setup binaries and related files utilized during feature updates.
  • Safe OS Updates: Corrections for the Safe OS component involved in updating the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).

Furthermore, Dynamic Update ensures that Language Pack (LP) and Features on Demand (FODs) content are retained throughout the upgrade process. It’s important to note that while these are not updates to LPs and FODs, they are re-acquisitions to guarantee their presence upon completion of the update.

How to Access the Updates

The Setup update can be manually downloaded from the Windows Update Catalog. You can find more information here: KB5050758. Additionally, users can download the WinRE update by visiting KB5053117.
