End of Support for Windows 10 and Related Notifications
The support lifecycle for Windows 10 officially concluded on October 14, 2025, marked by the release of the final Patch Tuesday update (KB5066791).Although Microsoft will no longer issue security updates for Windows 10, users can rest assured that Microsoft Defender will still provide some level of ongoing protection against threats.
As a result of the end of support, users of Windows 10 who have completed the installation of all cumulative updates are encountering a notification stating, “Your version of Windows has reached the end of support”on their Windows Update settings page. This alert signifies the conclusion of active support from Microsoft for this operating system.
False Notifications on Supported Versions
Interestingly, Microsoft has acknowledged that this end-of-support message is also appearing erroneously on certain versions and editions of Windows 10 that remain under support. This confusion primarily affects the following versions, which are eligible for the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program:
- Windows 10, version 22H2 Pro, Education, or Enterprise editions correctly enrolled in the ESU program with an appropriate product key.
- Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021
- Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021
Proposed Solutions and Workarounds
To address the erroneous notifications, Microsoft has rolled out a cloud configuration update. However, it is important for users to ensure their systems meet certain requirements to receive this update:
- Active internet connection
- Enabled downloads via the OneSettings CSP (Configuration Service Provider) policy
- Firewall access must be permitted
- No blocking of dynamic updates
While Microsoft is currently working on a long-term resolution, IT administrators can utilize a special group policy to manage the situation. This policy facilitates the installation and configuration of a Known Issue Rollback (KIR) on affected systems. The relevant rollback can be downloaded using the following link:
- Download for Windows 10, version 21H2 and 22H2 — KB5066791 251020_20401 Known Issue Rollback
Steps to Implement the Group Policy Fix
In order to resolve the issue, administrators must correctly install and configure the provided Group Policy. This requires setting the “KB5066791 251020_20401 Known Issue Rollback”value to “Disabled”.A system reboot will be necessary for the changes to take effect.
