New Outlook Crashes on Windows Server 2016 and Workaround Solutions

Recently, Microsoft addressed a significant issue affecting Classic Outlook, which was experiencing crashes on Windows Server 2016. Following this resolution, the company has identified yet another crash scenario known as APPCRASH.

Details of the Crash Issue

According to information shared in a support document, users encounter crashes when attempting to create a new email or while replying to or forwarding existing messages. This issue is traceable through specific event logs that can help users determine if they are indeed affected by this bug.

Microsoft states the following in their documentation:

ISSUE

After updating to Version 2412 (Build 18324.20168), Classic Outlook may crash when starting a new email or while replying to or forwarding one.

To verify if this is the cause of the crash, users should check the Windows Event Viewer Application Log for crash events 1000 or 1001. The pertinent details are:

Workaround for Affected Users

For users on the current channel facing this issue, Microsoft has provided a temporary fix while they work on an official update:

STATUS: WORKAROUND

This issue is scheduled to be resolved with the upcoming release of Version 2501 (Build 18429.20000) expected on January 28, 2025.

In the meantime, users can revert to the previous version, 2411 (Build 18227.20162), using the following steps:

  1. Open a Command Prompt with Administrator privileges.
  2. Input the following commands, pressing Enter after each:

    cd %programfiles%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun

    officec2rclient.exe /update user updatetoversion=16.0.18227.20162

  3. To avoid automatic updates reverting the changes, disable updates by navigating to File > Office Account > Update Options > Disable Updates.
  4. Set a reminder to check back on February 11th to re-enable updates, or refer to this Known Issue to see if a fix is implemented sooner.
