Microsoft & OpenAI To Develop Stargate, The World’s Largest AI Supercomputer With A Cost of $100 Billion
Microsoft and OpenAI have announced their joint plan to construct Stargate, the biggest supercomputer dedicated to AI, with a staggering valuation of $100 billion.
Microsoft and OpenAI Unveil Plans for Revolutionary Stargate Supercomputer to Accelerate AI Advancements
It appears that we are entering a time where the main competition will revolve around computing power, with companies striving to attain dominance in this field. In recent times, we have witnessed some remarkable advancements, thanks to the growing interest in AI, but the most recent one stands out. According to The Information, Microsoft and OpenAI have joined forces to create a “AI powerhouse”known as the Stargate, which will surpass the size and cost of even the largest data centers in operation today.
The reported valuation of Stargate is a staggering $100 billion. This partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI aims to make the system operational by 2028, with a projected timeline of six years. The project will be divided into phases, with Stargate being classified as a phase 5 system. Currently in the planning stages, there are rumors that the data center for Stargate may be powered by nuclear energy due to its massive power consumption of several gigawatts, which cannot be sustained by conventional methods.
The specific details regarding the equipment and hardware gear onboard the Stargate, as well as its deployment location, have not yet been determined. It is also possible that the Stargate may have multiple data centers located in one place, rather than a single center. Therefore, it is premature to discuss the project at this time. However, it is worth noting that these types of data centers will become increasingly prevalent in the future, as they play a crucial role in the advancement of AI. According to NVIDIA’s CEO, the market for these data centers could potentially reach $2 trillion within the next five years.
Considering the fact that we are in the early stages of the AI era, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman intends to secure $7 trillion in funding for his AI goals. This is crucial as the future of AI will require a strong infrastructure, which necessitates significant financial resources. With proper funding, Altman’s ambitions may very well be achievable.
According to The Information, Microsoft and OpenAI are collaborating to build a $100 billion Stargate AI supercomputer.
