Latest Windows Updates: November 2024 Patch Tuesday and Dynamic Updates
This past week, Microsoft implemented its November 2024 Patch Tuesday updates for Windows 11, which included vital Setup and Recovery dynamic updates. Notably, for the first time in a while, updates were also provided for Windows 10, addressing various system concerns.
Installation Failures: The 0x80070643 Error
Among these updates, a particular Recovery update, identified as KB5048239, has been causing installation issues. Users are encountering a “0x80070643″error, an installation failure that has sparked some frustration.
User Experiences and Concerns
For instance, a forum user known as Sebastian94 expressed skepticism about the KB5048239 update on the Windows 10 Forums, questioning its effectiveness with the remark, “KB5048239: Another poor update of WinRE?“
Similarly, another contributor, dritzTX, shared their struggles on the Microsoft forum with the same error. In a detailed post, they recounted:
“I have exactly the same problem as this (reported earlier this year), but with the new KB5048239 update. I get the 0x80070643 error when it tries to install. Retried several times, but same issue. I’m pretty sure this is the same problem that I had back in January, too. All security updates have worked fine since then, till now.”
“At that time, I was informed of a general issue with the update, and a fix was forthcoming from Microsoft. I waited, and eventually, that previous update was resolved. Here we are again…”
Historical Context of the 0x80070643 Error
This isn’t the first instance of such a problem. Previously, updates KB5034440 and KB5034441 led to the same “0x80070643 – ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE”message, prompting Microsoft to withdraw these updates and replace them with KB5042321 and KB5042320.
Underlying Causes and Solutions
The recurring installation failures are linked to insufficient space in the Windows Recovery partition, which necessitates a minimum of 250 MB. Microsoft has acknowledged this issue and provided guidance:
If you want to ensure your device receives this update, please refer to the Instructions to manually resize your partition or utilize a sample script to expand the WinRE recovery partition size.
Once you’ve adjusted your partition to have adequate disk space, navigate to Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates to install the necessary updates.
Accessing Workarounds
Guidance on these workarounds, including a manual Recovery drive resize guide published on July 21, 2024, and a corresponding PowerShell script, can be consulted for resolution.
