Microsoft .NET 7 will no longer be supported after May 14, 2024
Software developers who have yet to update from Microsoft. NET 7 should consider doing so soon. The company has set an “end of support”date for the previous version of the open-source development tool.
Microsoft announced in a recent blog post that support for. NET 7 will officially end on May 14, 2024. This means that the tool will receive 18 months of official support. Microsoft follows a Standard Term Support (STS) policy for odd number versions of. NET, providing them with the same amount of support time.
Microsoft has stated that May 14 coincides with their monthly event, known as Patch Tuesday, and therefore. NET 7 may receive its final update on that day.
After May 14, the fate of apps created using. NET 7 will be as follows:
- Applications that use this version will continue to run.
- No new security updates will be issued for. NET 7.
- Continuing to use an unsupported version will expose you to security vulnerabilities.
- You may not be able to access technical support for. NET 7 applications.
Furthermore, Microsoft has announced that the. NET 7 component in Visual Studio will no longer be supported and will be made optional for Visual Studio 2022 versions 17.6 and 17.4, starting with the June 2024 servicing updates for these versions.
According to Microsoft, if you are aware that you are using a. NET 7 app, it is recommended to contact the app’s developer or provider to inquire about the availability of a more recent. NET 8 version.
Referring to. NET 8, which was officially released in November 2023, it is currently expected to remain in service until November 2026. In February 2024, the company also released the first preview version of the upcoming developer tool update,. NET 9. However, it is not set to become official until November 2024.
