Microsoft has introduced an innovative orchestration platform designed to streamline the app update process for developers through Windows Update.
Introducing the Windows Update Orchestration Platform: A Unified Solution for Application Management
Traditionally, Windows Update primarily focuses on updating the operating system components, leaving line-of-business (LOB) applications and third-party software to be updated separately. This separate management creates challenges, which is why Microsoft is launching this orchestration platform — to facilitate centralized updates for both LOB and third-party applications, simplifying the overall process.
The new feature, dubbed the Windows Update Orchestration Platform, empowers Windows users by allowing them to receive updates for all applications from a single interface rather than managing updates for each app individually. Developers are currently able to participate in the private preview, enabling them to experience this streamlined management approach firsthand.

Microsoft has emphasized the need for this orchestration platform by addressing issues such as CPU and bandwidth surges during updates, confusing notifications, and excessive support costs. By implementing this new architecture, users can expect to manage all their updates in one place, significantly easing the developers’ burden as well.
IT administrators, in particular, stand to gain a lot from this orchestration platform, as they have often relied on disparate update solutions. The new system offers various advantages for developers, including more efficient scheduling to minimize productivity disruptions and lower energy usage, consistent update notifications through Windows Update, centralized update histories, and integrated troubleshooting tools, among other features.
Developers can integrate their applications into the preview of the Windows Update orchestration platform using a set of Windows Runtime APIs and PowerShell commands. This integration allows for comprehensive app management, including registration, defining updates, implementing custom update logic, scheduling updates, and reporting on status.
