Microsoft KB5043145 Issue: Restarting to Blue/Green Screens and BitLocker Recovery Solutions

Microsoft KB5043145 Issue: Restarting to Blue/Green Screens and BitLocker Recovery Solutions

This week, Microsoft launched the KB5043145 non-security preview update (C-release) for both Windows 11 23H2 and 24H2. The buzz surrounding this update was largely due to speculation about a potential preview of the 2024 feature update accompanying this release.

However, that did not occur, and users can be relieved that Microsoft opted not to proceed with releasing Windows 11 24H2 as the September C-release. This decision comes after Microsoft acknowledged that KB5043145 is causing significant issues on various systems, including instances of devices repeatedly rebooting, blue screens (BSOD), green screens (GSOD), or launching BitLocker Recovery via the Windows Automatic Repair Tool.

Microsoft stated:

We have received reports from customers regarding devices experiencing multiple restarts or becoming unresponsive, with blue or green screens following attempts to install the September 2024 non-security preview Windows update (KB5043145).

As per the reports, some devices automatically invoke the Automatic Repair tool after numerous reboot attempts. This tool aims to diagnose and fix common issues that may hinder proper device booting. In specific scenarios, BitLocker recovery can also be initiated.

Affected Platforms:

Client: Windows 11, version 23H2, Windows 11, version 22H2

Server: none

Next Steps: We are actively investigating this issue and will share updates as more information becomes available.

If you remember, similar problems related to repeated restarts and BitLocker recovery surfaced earlier this year in June and July, and it appears this recent issue has amalgamated the two, presenting significant challenges for affected users.

Microsoft is clearly in the process of understanding the underlying issue and is gathering further details, as it mentions:

Your input assists us in expediting our investigation.
