Microsoft’s Latest Update: Windows 11 2024 Rollout and Windows 10 Support End
Recently, Microsoft announced significant developments regarding its operating systems. The Windows 11 2024 update, also known as version 24H2, has officially “reached the last phase of the gradual rollout, ”making it available for download by all users. End of Support for Windows 10 Approaches
Simultaneously, Microsoft took the opportunity to remind users about the pending end of support for Windows 10 that is neither Long-Term Servicing Branch (LTSB) nor Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC).According to their official Windows health dashboard, users should be aware that:
Current status as of May 2, 2025
On October 14, 2025, support for Windows 10 will conclude. After this date, devices operating on Windows 10 will no longer receive fixes for known issues, time zone updates, technical support, or the monthly security updates necessary to protect against the latest threats.
*Note: Long-Term Servicing Branch (LTSB) and Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) releases have different lifecycle support policies.
Your Upgrade Options
With the end of support approaching, Microsoft has several recommendations for users to transition from Windows 10:
- Upgrade to Windows 11: Check if your current Windows 10 system qualifies for an upgrade to Windows 11. Microsoft is offering the latest feature update (version 24H2) for eligible devices.
- Purchase a New PC: If your device is not compatible with Windows 11, Microsoft suggests investing in a new PC. Notably, the company highlighted the advantages of Copilot+ AI-enabled PCs, emphasizing their vast improvements over older Windows 10 models, backed by compelling statistics.
- Consider Linux: For users with older PCs that lack Windows 11 support, ESET proposes switching to a Linux operating system as a viable alternative.
- Extended Security Updates (ESU): For individuals and organizations that require continued support, purchasing Extended Security Updates is an option. Microsoft announced the availability of ESUs in April 2024, providing critical updates for users unable to upgrade.
The options include:
- Check if your current Windows 10 PC can upgrade to Windows 11.
- Purchase a new Windows 11 PC.
- Purchase Extended Security Updates (ESU) for organizations of all sizes as previously announced in April 2024.
- For the first time, purchase an ESU option for individual users.
