Microsoft’s Recall Dilemma: Testing Phase Starts with Known Issues
After an extended period of delays, Microsoft’s Recall feature is now available for public testing within the Windows Insider Program. Responding to earlier criticisms and user feedback regarding its initial launch, Microsoft has made significant strides to enhance data privacy and security. However, prospective testers should be aware of a notable bug that may allow Recall to capture screenshots from sites that should be filtered out.
Current Limitations of Recall
According to the release notes for the latest Windows 11 Dev build 26120.2415, there is a specific scenario in which Recall may inadvertently take snapshots of websites that users have designated as off-limits. This occurs when users are employing the Split Screen or Sidebar features in Microsoft Edge:
Websites added as filters may be saved if the content is in split screen or sidebar pane in Edge. This will be addressed in an update.
Security and Storage of Recall Snapshots
Microsoft has consistently emphasized that snapshots taken by Recall are stored locally on your device, ensuring that they never leave your control. In fact, turning off Recall will erase all saved snapshots with no recovery options. Each screenshot is encrypted and can only be accessed through authentication via Windows Hello, reassuring users about their data’s security. Nevertheless, Microsoft acknowledges that some users may be hesitant to permit the operating system to capture everything displayed on their screens, even if the content remains local. For this reason, there are settings to exclude specific applications and websites from being captured.
Consider Waiting for Updates
For users who are uncertain yet eager to test Recall, it may be prudent to hold off until more updates are released. Microsoft has confirmed that the previously mentioned bug is slated for resolution in a future patch, along with addressing other known issues. Alternatively, users can avoid opening sensitive content in Split View or Sidebar, minimizing the risk of unintended captures.
Availability Details
At present, Recall is exclusively accessible to Windows Insiders participating in the Dev Channel on Copilot+ PCs equipped with Snapdragon X processors. Users with AMD and Intel-powered devices featuring newer processors and NPUs will need to wait a little longer for Recall’s rollout.
