Microsoft Teams Calendar Upgrade: Key Changes and Timeline

In early August, Microsoft initiated the process of retiring the legacy Calendar feature from Teams, introducing a new Calendar designed to streamline and enhance user collaboration. This revamped Calendar is intended to work seamlessly with Microsoft Copilot and Microsoft Places, unifying the calendar experience across Teams, the latest Outlook for Windows, Outlook on the web, and Places.

The primary goal of this redesign, as stated by Microsoft, is to “enhance productivity across Microsoft 365.” By incorporating familiar calendar functionalities with the advanced AI capabilities offered by Copilot, Microsoft aims to create a more integrated and efficient workflow for users. This modification is part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to enhance its productivity suite through AI integration.

It’s worth noting that Microsoft’s interest in sharing the calendar experience between the New Outlook for Windows and Teams was first showcased back in October of the previous year. This move signals a determined shift towards a more unified and intelligent user experience across Microsoft’s platforms.

Upon the completion of the rollout, the new Calendar will automatically be set as the default option, meaning users will no longer have the ability to revert to the legacy version. Microsoft has confirmed that the old calendar interface will be entirely phased out, removing the option to toggle between the previous and new layouts. This decision is expected to significantly impact users who have grown accustomed to the legacy interface, requiring organizations to adapt swiftly as they will be restricted to the new Microsoft 365 calendar.

Revised Rollout Schedule

In response to user feedback and concerns regarding the transition, Microsoft has opted to revise its rollout schedule, issuing an apology for any inconvenience caused. The updated timeline is as follows:

  • Public Preview: Early November 2025 – Mid-November 2025
  • Targeted Release: Early November 2025 – Mid-November 2025
  • General Availability (Worldwide): Early November 2025 – Mid-November 2025
  • General Availability (Gallatin, GCC, GCC High, DoD, USSec): This rollout will not proceed at this time as a result of further review, and Microsoft has issued an apology for any inconvenience.
  • General Availability (USNat): Following careful assessment, Microsoft will also refrain from proceeding with this change at this time, offering apologies for any disruption.
