Microsoft to Discontinue Mobile Plans App for Windows

Many users may be unaware of the Mobile Plans application, primarily designed for Windows PCs equipped with cellular capabilities. This utility was created to facilitate connections between Windows devices and cellular networks, thereby encouraging the adoption of eSIM technology. However, Microsoft has recently announced its decision to retire the Mobile Plans app on both Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Transitioning to Web-Based Solutions

In lieu of the Mobile Plans app, Microsoft now recommends that users purchase data plans directly from their mobile operator’s website. This shift aims to provide greater flexibility for mobile operators, allowing them to design custom sign-up portals and payment processes. For users, this means eliminating the need for an additional application, simplifying the experience.

Enhanced eSIM Provisioning

Windows 11 users will benefit from new built-in features within the Settings app. These functionalities prompt users to share their device identifiers with mobile operators, streamlining the eSIM provisioning process. Once users consent, their eSIM configurations will be completed automatically, requiring no manual setup.

Timeline for Change and Ongoing Support

It is crucial to understand that while the Mobile Plans app will be discontinued, users will retain cellular connectivity. Microsoft is facilitating a seamless transition as users move to web portals provided by their mobile carriers. The Mobile Plans app will remain operational until February 27, 2026, after which it will no longer function and will be removed from the Microsoft Store. During this period, Microsoft will collaborate with mobile operators to streamline the migration process.
