Microsoft introduces unexpected ESU programs for Skype for Business and Exchange

Upcoming End of Support for Windows 10 and Microsoft Products

On October 14, 2025, various versions of Windows 10 will reach the end of their support lifecycle. This date is particularly significant as it coincides with multiple other Microsoft products also reaching their end of life (EoL), including Skype for Business Server 2015, Skype for Business Server 2019, Exchange 2016, and Exchange 2019.

Extended Security Updates (ESU) Initiative

In response to customer feedback, Microsoft has introduced Extended Security Updates (ESU) programs for several of these products. Advisories detailing the ESU offerings for Exchange 2016 and 2019 and Skype for Business 2015 and 2019 have been published. These programs closely mirror each other, addressing services within the same operational framework.

Migration Needs Drive Updated Security Support

Many customers have indicated that they are in the midst of transitioning to Exchange Subscription Edition (SE) and Skype for Business SE. However, they require additional support beyond the impending October deadline as they complete these migrations.

Key Details of the ESU Program

Microsoft’s extension comes with specific guidelines:

  • This ESU program is not a wholesale extension of the support lifecycle and is available to select customers.
  • Organizations must contact their Microsoft representative starting August 1 to request an additional six months of security updates.
  • Updates will focus exclusively on security vulnerabilities classified as Critical and Important by the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC).
  • These security updates will be distributed privately to enrolled customers and will not be accessible through public channels such as Windows Update.

Formal Limitations on ESU Extensions

Microsoft firmly stated that the six-month ESU will not be extended beyond April 2026. They have discouraged any further discussions on the topic, urging customers to expedite their migration to Subscription Edition versions for both Exchange and Skype for Business.
