Exciting New Image Cropping Feature in OneNote

OneNote has long been recognized as a versatile note-taking application, offering users an array of formatting tools for both text and media. A key benefit of this platform is that it is available for download as a standalone application from the Microsoft Store, without requiring a Microsoft 365 subscription. Recently, Microsoft has initiated the rollout of a new feature that many users have eagerly anticipated: the ability to crop images directly within OneNote.

Streamlining Image Editing in OneNote

Previously, users needed to depend on external software to crop images before importing them into OneNote, which could be cumbersome and time-consuming. With the introduction of this new cropping feature, editing images has been significantly simplified, allowing for easy adjustments to remove unnecessary background elements or to zoom in on specific details.

How to Crop Images in OneNote

To crop an image in OneNote, follow these straightforward steps:

  1. Launch the OneNote application and either select an existing image or insert a new one.
  2. Navigate to the Picture Format section in the app ribbon.
  3. You can choose one of the following methods to crop your image:
  • Using the Mouse: Click Picture Format > Crop, then drag the crop handles around your image to manually trim it.
  • Using the Keyboard: Select Picture Format > Crop with Keyboard, and utilize the arrow keys (← ↑ → ↓) for precise adjustments to the crop area.

Once cropping is complete, simply press Enter or click anywhere outside the image to instantly apply your changes.

Availability and Feedback

This cropping functionality has been a highly requested enhancement among OneNote users, yet it is currently rolling out exclusively to Windows users who are part of the Insiders program and are running Version 2509 (Build 19323.10000) or later. While cropped images can be viewed on other platforms, including Mac, Android, iOS, and the web, the cropping feature itself is not yet supported on these devices.

If you have feedback regarding this new cropping capability or other suggestions for OneNote, you can easily share your thoughts by navigating to the Help > Feedback menu within the app.
