Microsoft Unveils Enhanced Sign-In Experience for Microsoft Accounts
Microsoft has introduced a revamped sign-in experience specifically designed for users of Microsoft Accounts. With over a billion accounts utilized for accessing platforms such as Windows, Xbox, and Microsoft 365, the company aims to streamline the sign-in process to be “more modern, simple, and secure.”
Streamlined User Interface with Fluent 2 Design
The newly updated interface adopts Microsoft’s Fluent 2 design language, which reduces visual clutter by minimizing the number of elements displayed on each screen. This thoughtful design decision facilitates a quicker sign-in process by creating a more intuitive user experience.
As new authentication methods, like passkeys, became available, we decided to redesign the sign in user experience as well. The new experience takes advantage of Microsoft’s “Fluent 2” design language to help users seamlessly transition between authentication and product experiences.
Adaptability Across Devices and Dark Mode Feature
One of the standout features of the redesigned sign-in process is its ability to adapt to varying screen sizes and device types, ranging from large monitors to compact mobile devices. Furthermore, Microsoft introduces a much-anticipated dark mode option, which intelligently detects the user’s system mode and adjusts accordingly. Initially, dark mode will be rolled out on gaming apps, with plans for integration into consumer apps and services soon after.

Consistent Branding and Visual Identity
The latest redesign emphasizes an “unmistakably Microsoft”aesthetic, focusing on consistency in colors, branding, buttons, links, and logos throughout the user interface. A new cohesive background will remain uniform across all products to enhance brand recognition.

Gradual Rollout Details
The revamped sign-in experience is already accessible on Xbox, with a broader rollout planned through April 2025. The updated interface will first appear on web and mobile applications, followed by Windows apps and additional services. Users should note that this rollout is incremental, meaning that the new features may not be available to everyone immediately.
Updates to the full set of Microsoft consumer experiences are happening in waves throughout March and April 2025. We prioritized redesigning and improving the most common and highly used screens, used in roughly 95% of sign in sessions.
Future Plans for Microsoft Entra Accounts
It is important to highlight that the enhancements currently apply solely to consumer Microsoft Accounts and not to Microsoft Entra accounts, which are associated with work and education. Microsoft has indicated that a redesign for the Microsoft Entra sign-in experience is on the horizon, leveraging insights gained from this consumer-focused upgrade.
