Microsoft Introduces New 3D Fluent Illustration Style Design

Historically, Microsoft’s design illustrations featured a flat aesthetic that aligned with the prevailing trends in the technology sector. However, the company’s design team has recently unveiled a significant transformation to its Fluent Design System, introducing a more dynamic three-dimensional quality to its illustrations.

In a recent article on the Microsoft Design blog, the company shared insights from public studies conducted regarding their existing Fluent design. They stated:

Our studies indicated that while our illustrations could be described as vibrant, inclusive, and friendly at first glance, they were perceived as dull and lacking emotion within consumer culture. The flat vector style that was once widely favored across the industry no longer conveyed messages effectively and was at odds with our core company values.

In collaboration with the Brand team, Microsoft Design has made the decision to refresh its illustrations. While the new Fluent Illustration style will retain its colorful essence, it will incorporate a 3D appearance moving forward. The blog elaborated:

By utilizing camera positioning and perspective in Fluent’s Elevation system, our 3D illustrations now rest on a tangible surface, adding depth to user experiences without detracting from user interactions. Many designs will also feature moments of action, transition, or interactivity.

Beyond the introduction of the 3D style, Microsoft Design is developing what they term “sophisticated renders,”designed to foster improved connections with the audience. Additionally, their new icons are set to be more “playful,”featuring organic shapes in contrast to the existing sharp designs employed in their icons and illustrations.

While there is no specific timeline for when these enhancements will make their debut in Microsoft products, such as software applications, it is evident that the design team has invested considerable thought and effort into this revamped visual identity. It will be intriguing to observe customer reactions once these changes are implemented.
