Microsoft’s New Windows Backup and Migration Apps: Key Developments
In March 2023, Microsoft embarked on a public testing phase for an innovative Windows Backup app. While the application has garnered positive attention for its utility, it has also faced criticism, particularly regarding issues like unrequested installations.
Emergence of the Migration App
Alongside the Backup app, Microsoft has been experimenting with a migration app. Early insights into this tool emerged in an Insider build earlier this year, leading eager Windows enthusiasts to reconstruct its user interface based on available data.
Interestingly, evidence of a component dubbed “WindowsMigration”was discovered in April 2024. However, at that time, Microsoft dismissed it as a mere bug, denying the existence of the app altogether.
Latest Developments
Recently, with updates from both the Dev channel and Beta channel builds, more comprehensive information about the migration tool has surfaced. Notably, it is now integrated into the Backup app. A Windows enthusiast known as phantomofearth played a pivotal role in unveiling this new feature.
Features of the Updated Backup App
Upon accessing the revamped Windows Backup app, users are presented with new options: “Backup this PC to OneDrive”and “Transfer files to new PC”via a network connection. This exciting addition allows users to seamlessly transfer local files, application settings, user credentials, and various other data to a new computer with ease. The pairing of devices requires only a simple passcode authentication, simplifying the process significantly.
