Introducing Customizable Notification Locations in Microsoft Teams
Recent updates on the Microsoft 365 Insider Blog, presented by Petr Klabal, shed light on an exciting new feature that allows users to customize the placement of notifications within Microsoft Teams. Users can now choose to position notifications in any of the four corners of the screen: bottom right, bottom left, top right, or top left. This enhancement aims to streamline user experience, offering several key advantages:
- Enhanced Focus: By shifting notifications to less obtrusive areas, users can reduce distractions and maintain better concentration on their tasks.
- Boosted Productivity: Although notifications are now more accessible, their new placement minimizes disruptions, allowing for a smoother workflow that can increase overall efficiency.
- Adaptive User Interface: The flexibility to reposition notifications means that users can tailor their workspace to better suit their individual preferences, creating a more comfortable working environment.
How to Customize Your Notifications
To take advantage of this feature, navigate to Settings > Notifications and Activity > Display. From there, select your desired notification location by clicking the corresponding radio button.
Availability and Accessing the Feature
It’s important to note that this feature is not yet universally available. Currently, it is accessible only to members of the Teams Public Preview or Microsoft 365 Targeted Release who are using the latest Teams client on Windows. Last year, Microsoft encouraged users to transition to this new Teams client for enhanced functionality.
Steps for Enabling the Public Preview
For IT administrators looking to enable the Public Preview for the Teams client, there are a few steps to follow:
- Log into the Microsoft Teams admin center.
- Select Teams > Teams Update Policies.
- Choose an existing policy or create a new one.
- Name and describe the update policy.
- Activate the Show Teams Preview Features setting:
- On for users in Current Channel (Preview): This option activates Teams Public Preview features for all users within the Office Current Channel (Preview).
- Mandatory for enrolled users: Users in the Office Current Channel (Preview) cannot disable Teams Public Preview.
- User opt-in: This setting permits users to enable Teams Public Preview voluntarily within the Teams app, as it is not switched on by default.
- Off: Public Preview features will not be available to users.
- On for everyone: This setting grants access to Teams Public Preview for all users without the option to turn it off.
Final Steps and Additional Features
Once the Public Preview is enabled, users can navigate to About Teams under Settings in the new Teams client and check the Public Preview box under Early Access. This update follows the recent introduction of a preview feature that allows users to pop out the Chat, Copilot, and Notes panes during meetings, further enhancing the functionality of Microsoft Teams.
