Microsoft Copilot Empowers Teams Collaboration
Since its announcement in early 2024, Microsoft Copilot has been enhancing productivity within Microsoft Teams, receiving numerous updates to refine its functionality. This innovative tool aids users by summarizing meetings, chats, and calls, suggesting actionable steps, and improving messaging quality. Notably, it can function as a meeting facilitator, managing agendas and tracking key decisions.
New Features for Group Chats
Recently, Microsoft unveiled an exciting enhancement to Copilot’s capabilities: it can now be integrated into group chats within Microsoft Teams. This upgrade aims to further streamline collaboration, enabling users to add Copilot either to existing group chats or initiate new ones directly. Once integrated, users can leverage the following features:
- Summarize discussions or provide answers to chat-related inquiries.
- Extract information from documents, files, or relevant web sources.
- Generate meeting agendas seamlessly.
When responding to user inquiries in group chats, Copilot utilizes access to all relevant documents, chat and channel histories, and online searches—if permitted—to deliver comprehensive support.
Understanding the Limitations of Copilot
Despite its robust functionality, Microsoft has clarified some limitations regarding Copilot in Teams:
- Copilot cannot be incorporated into meeting chats or private chats.
- Users can share a maximum of 10 messages from Copilot within group chats.
- Text-to-image generation capabilities are not currently available in Copilot for Teams.
- The functionality to create or remove a Copilot from group chats is not yet supported in mobile applications.
Subscription Requirements
To take advantage of the Copilot features in Teams, users need a Microsoft 365 Copilot subscription. While those without a Copilot license can still participate in chats, they will be unable to directly @mention Copilot or pose questions to it. However, they can view responses that have been generated by others using Copilot within the chat.
