Recently, Microsoft acknowledged a troublesome bug affecting some Windows 10 users, which incorrectly indicates that their system is “out of support.”This has led to confusion since not all users have reached the end of their support period. In fact, Windows 10 can still be extended for free, and users on Windows 10 Enterprise or LTSC are already secured without needing to purchase Extended Security Updates (ESU).
Although Microsoft hasn’t disclosed specific details, they confirmed that certain users may encounter the message, “Your version of Windows has reached the end of support, ”even if their operating system remains fully supported.
In a statement, Microsoft addressed the issue, confirming that the alert may incorrectly appear in the Windows Update Settings. For instance, a user reported receiving this notification while utilizing Windows 10 21H2 IoT Enterprise LTSC, which enjoys support until at least 2027. Despite this longevity, the user still faced the same warning in their settings.
The crux of the matter is that the notification indicating “Your version of Windows has reached the end of support”fails to resolve unless the user upgrades to Windows 11 versions 25H2 or 24H2 LTSC. Furthermore, while the “Check for updates” button will still search for updates, it won’t eliminate the misleading alert.
This glitch signifies that a support termination message appears incorrectly, suggesting that users are beyond their support period. However, in reality, they may still fall under Windows 10’s ESU coverage, which may explain the absence of the option to choose the Extended Security Updates (ESU).
Do You Still Receive Windows Updates If Support Is Wrongly Declared as Ended?
Yes, indeed. Although the Windows system erroneously shows an end-of-support alert, this does not imply that future cumulative or security updates will cease, particularly for those enrolled in Windows 10 ESU.
Microsoft reassures users that new security updates, including the upcoming November 2025 Patch Tuesday, will still be extended to the following systems:
- Windows 10 Pro, Education, and Enterprise users that are configured with an ESU product key
- Enterprise LTSC 2021
- IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021
In a formal statement, Microsoft confirmed, “Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 remain fully supported and will continue to receive security updates throughout their respective life cycles.”
What Should You Do If You Encounter the “Out of Support” Message on Your Supported Device?
Microsoft is aware of the situation and has initiated a server-side fix, which is in the process of being rolled out. Users whose Windows 10 PCs are supported or enrolled in ESU need not worry.
The false end-of-support message should dissipate within 24 to 48 hours.
