Microsoft explains that Windows 11 24H2 Update Is “Optional” for Office PCs

Yesterday, Microsoft launched Windows 11 LTSC 2024 and highlighted the new features that distinguish it from Windows 10. The company also released a comprehensive post detailing the Windows 11 24H2 upgrade information, compatibility requirements, and features particularly beneficial for managed enterprise and office PCs.

In addition, Microsoft has reminded IT system administrators about the newly introduced deployment feature, which empowers them to decide whether to install a feature update.

This policy change, which Microsoft introduced earlier this year in May, allows feature updates to be designated as either “required,”meaning the 24H2 feature update will be installed automatically, or “optional,”signifying that the update will not be forcibly installed, unlike previous versions.

Arnab Mitra, a Senior Program Manager for Microsoft 365, conveyed this information through a post on X on their official account:

As is often the case, Microsoft encourages users to upgrade, particularly for those still operating on Windows 10, emphasizing immediate upgrades. The company asserts that the app compatibility of its operating system is exceptional, even describing Windows 11 as “the most compatible Windows operating system ever.”

Additionally, a video was released showcasing several key highlights of Windows 11, including performance improvements. Interestingly, it referenced a commissioned study illustrating a significant performance gap compared to Windows 10.

Notwithstanding some promotional content, Windows 11 24H2 introduces a myriad of new features, some of which are unannounced. While certain enhancements, like improved ReFS performance, may not appeal to all users, others are targeted toward the general audience. Notable updates include advancements in WDDM 3.2 aimed at reducing graphics driver crashes in version 24H2, along with AV1 video encoding support.
