As part of its ambitious objective to achieve zero waste, become carbon-negative, and ensure water positivity by 2030, Microsoft is implementing substantial changes within its Xbox division. The recent introduction of a new Xbox repairability program, which features a designated Xbox Authorized Service Provider, exemplifies these sustainability efforts.
Introducing uBreakiFix as the New Repair Partner
The newly appointed partner, uBreakiFix by Asurion, boasts nearly 700 locations across the United States, specializing in the repair of various electronics. This partnership aims to enhance accessibility for gamers needing support with their Xbox consoles.
Expanding Repair Options for Gamers
In a recent blog post, the company emphasized, “We’ve heard from players that they want more options for support when their Xbox consoles need repair.”To address this demand, the repairability program will offer expanded services for Xbox Series X|S consoles, aiming to minimize waste and prioritize environmentally-friendly practices.
Available Repair Options Starting January 20
Beginning January 20, gamers will have the opportunity to repair specific models, including the Xbox Series S – 1TB in Robot White, and both the Xbox Series X – 1TB Digital Edition in Robot White and the 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition, through uBreakiFix locations. This initiative marks a significant shift from relying solely on Microsoft’s own customer support channels.
Environmental Impact and Device Longevity
The company further stated, “By expanding the number of ways players can get support and repair for their Xbox consoles, we also help extend the longevity of Xbox devices, reduce waste, promote reuse, and ultimately reduce our environmental impact.”Notably, Microsoft has also achieved a reduction in power consumption for the Xbox Series S by nearly 10% when using media applications, thanks to recent system updates.
Recent Partnerships and Future Directions
This announcement follows closely on the heels of Microsoft’s partnership with iFixit, which was formalized just weeks prior. These strategic collaborations signify a robust commitment to sustainable practices within the gaming industry.
