Microsoft Establishes AI Health Division, Recruiting Talent from Google’s DeepMind

Microsoft’s New Consumer Health AI Initiative

According to a recent report by The Financial Times, Microsoft has established a specialized consumer health group within its AI division. This initiative is spearheaded by Mustafa Suleyman, the CEO of Microsoft AI and co-founder of DeepMind, where he previously directed the health unit.

Strategic Leadership and Talent Acquisition

Suleyman has assembled a powerful team, including former colleagues from DeepMind, to drive Microsoft’s ambitions in consumer health AI. Notably, Dominic King, the previous head of DeepMind’s health endeavors, has joined Microsoft as a vice president, leading the new team based in London. Additionally, Christopher Kelly, a clinical research scientist and neonatal intensive care physician at DeepMind, is also part of this newly formed unit, alongside other DeepMind alumni.

Microsoft recognizes healthcare as a critical sector for the advancement of responsible AI technologies. Their mission is clear: to “inform, support and empower everyone”through these innovative tools, reflecting a dedication to ethical development in an increasingly complex tech landscape.

A Return to Roots Amid Controversy

This new role marks a significant return for Suleyman, who had initially focused on health-related projects at DeepMind. However, the health unit encountered significant challenges, particularly concerning data privacy issues tied to its collaborations with the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). The fallout from these controversies led to the health unit becoming an independent subsidiary of Google in 2019.

Suleyman’s Journey to Microsoft

After his departure from DeepMind in 2019, Suleyman transitioned to a policy role at Google, then moved on to become a venture investor. Following this, he founded the AI startup Inflection, from which he and several key team members were acquired by Microsoft earlier this year.

The Competitive Landscape of Health AI

The formation of this consumer health division highlights the tech industry’s competitive drive to create AI solutions for everyday use, particularly in healthcare. A recent Deloitte survey noted that nearly half (48%) of respondents have sought assistance from generative AI chatbots—such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, and Claude—for health-related inquiries, addressing concerns regarding various conditions, symptoms, and mental health.

In this rapidly evolving sector, Microsoft aims to position itself at the forefront of AI-driven healthcare solutions, catering to a growing demand for accessible and responsible healthcare information.
