Microsoft Enhances Windows App for Web Users

In March, we reported on Microsoft’s decision to phase out the Remote Desktop app, opting instead for the advanced Windows App designed to streamline access to various services such as Windows 365 Cloud PCs, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box. Since its general release in September of last year, the new app has undergone several updates, with the latest improvements focusing on the web version.

Introducing the Remote App Launcher

A significant enhancement is the introduction of the Remote App Launcher. This feature allows users engaged in remote Windows sessions via their web browsers to launch additional applications seamlessly without needing to exit the current session or switch tabs. A convenient button is now situated on the web client’s toolbar; simply click it to access a dropdown menu of available applications, simplifying your workflow.

Streamlined Printing Capabilities

Another notable upgrade is in the printing functionality within the web app. Users can now print documents directly to printers connected to their local computers, significantly enhancing usability. This improvement eliminates previously cumbersome steps needed to obtain physical documents from remote sessions, ensuring a more efficient printing process.

Seamless Transition to Desktop App

For users who need the full range of features available in the desktop version, Microsoft has optimized the transition from the web client to the desktop application. This is especially useful for tasks requiring multi-monitor support or other advanced functions. An update now allows easy navigation to the installed desktop client from the web portal.

When accessing your Cloud PC, simply select the “Connect in desktop app”option, which appears during the selection process or within the remote session. This feature enables you to continue your work seamlessly in the desktop environment, ensuring an uninterrupted workflow.
