Microsoft Enables Referencing of Large Documents and Complete Folders in Word

Enhanced Referencing Features in Microsoft Word with Copilot

Microsoft is making significant strides in augmenting Copilot’s referencing skills within Office documents. The recent update empowers Word users to access a broader spectrum of data while crafting, reviewing, and finalizing their documents. Notably, users can now request comprehensive analyses on specific topics by utilizing entire folders instead of being limited to single files, responding to feedback for greater flexibility in this feature.

Diving Deeper: Accessing Folders

In addition to referencing individual files, emails, and meetings, Microsoft 365 Copilot can now explore entire folders stored on OneDrive or SharePoint. It’s essential to note that if a folder contains more than 10 files, Copilot will refer to the 10 most recent ones for context and insights.

Support for Extensive Documents

This update also introduces the ability to reference significantly larger documents—up to 1.5 million words or 3, 000 pages. Furthermore, users can now reference up to 20 items while employing the Draft with Copilot feature, enhancing the efficiency of document creation and collaboration.

Availability Across Platforms

Currently, folder referencing is accessible in Word for the Web, with Microsoft announcing plans to roll out this feature to desktop applications for Windows and Mac by July 2025. The enhancements regarding document size and the capacity to reference multiple files will be available for both Word for the Web and desktop apps within this month.

Getting Started with the New Features

If you’re eager to explore these new capabilities, simply navigate to Word for the Web and create a new document. Open the Copilot prompt window, input your request, and use a forward slash (or click the paperclip button) to access the upload interface. Select the files you’d like to reference and confirm your choice by clicking the blue arrow button.

Further Enhancements to Copilot

Additionally, Microsoft has rolled out improvements to Copilot in Word, including enhanced voice note handling. Users can now easily transcribe audio notes into prebuilt or custom templates, making it even simpler to incorporate spoken ideas into written documents.
