Browser Market Share Insights: Trends and Statistics
In recent months, Statcounter’s research has shed light on the evolving landscape of desktop browser market share. Unlike the dynamic shifts observed in the Windows operating systems—where Windows 11 is rapidly gaining traction against Windows 10—the browser market remains largely stagnant. Competing against the dominance of Google Chrome proves to be a formidable challenge, even for tech giant Microsoft.
According to Statcounter, the last year has witnessed minimal changes in the global desktop browser market. Google Chrome continues to reign supreme with a staggering 65.02% market share, even amidst various regulatory challenges. Notably, this figure marks a slight decrease of 0.62 percentage points from the previous month in April 2025.
Microsoft Edge: A Slow Climb
One year ago, in April 2024, Microsoft Edge held a 12.97% share of the market. As of May 2025, it has made a marginal increase to 13.29%. This reflects a dip of 0.08 points over the last month but an overall gain of 0.32 points year-over-year. Despite being the default browser on both Windows 10 and 11, and efforts by Microsoft to encourage users to transition away from Chrome—including some controversial tactics—Edge has remained stagnant, with its peak share hitting 13.9% in February 2025.

Regional Variations in Browser Popularity
While Microsoft’s performance globally is lackluster, there are notable exceptions at the regional level. In the United Kingdom, for instance, Edge boasts a more respectable market share of 21.78%, while Chrome accounts for 52.45%. In stark contrast, India presents a different picture altogether, with Chrome dominating at an impressive 86.22% market share, leaving Edge trailing behind at just 5.65%.
Other Notable Browsers
Aside from Chrome and Edge, Apple’s Safari stands as the third most widely used desktop browser globally, holding a market share of 7.95% (a decline of 0.3 points in April 2025).Following closely, Mozilla Firefox possesses 6.14% of the market with a slight uptick of 0.12 points; meanwhile, Opera rounds out the top five with a modest 3.04% share, gaining 0.1 points.
