Microsoft Edge Transforms Into Copilot with AI Features: How to Disable Certain Functions

As of now, Microsoft Edge seems to have transitioned from being a traditional web browser to a platform primarily designed for hosting Copilot. The default user interface now prominently features Copilot, showcasing chat history on the left side and an interactive compose box at the center, along with the capability to create images directly on the New Tab Page, which is typically reserved for browsing.

Despite Microsoft’s struggle to capture significant market share with Edge, which pales in comparison to Google’s dominance, Edge has been a robust alternative to Chrome. The move to adopt the Chromium base not only resolved many compatibility challenges but also preserved the essential design elements of Edge, allowing it to carve a niche in the competitive browser landscape. Features like vertical tabs and Collections have helped Edge establish a unique identity.

Looking ahead to 2026, the essence of Edge as a browser appears to be fading. The New Tab Page, which traditionally included an address bar and easy access to frequently visited sites, has now morphed into a comprehensive Copilot interface.

Default New Tab Experience and the Prominence of Copilot

Microsoft had previously announced that Copilot mode would be an optional feature; however, it appears that this promise has not been upheld. Although Copilot remains an optional feature, it is now activated by default, creating an impression that AI has taken over the browser experience.

For instance, a glance at the home page reveals a Copilot compose box alongside a sidebar, making AI a dual presence in the user interface. However, this integration poses challenges, particularly when navigating the address bar. Users may find that typing a URL often redirects them to the Copilot compose box instead of loading the requested page. This disconcerting behavior, which can be replicated by entering a URL immediately after opening Edge, may symbolize a bug or unexpected edge case.

This issue may not occur consistently, but repeated attempts will likely lead to this frustrating experience for many users.

Can AI Features Be Disabled in Edge?

Although completely disabling AI in Edge is not feasible, as it continues to operate in the background, users can deactivate certain features to reduce potential disruptions. To do so, navigate to the Edge Settings, locate the AI Innovations section, and toggle off Copilot mode.

In contrast, Google Chrome incorporates Gemini integration in a less intrusive manner, featuring it only in the title bar while preserving a more traditional homepage devoid of AI clutter.

While Edge remains a capable browser, its character has undeniably changed. The ongoing transition towards a Chromium-based interface has led to the erosion of its distinct design, with exclusive features like the Edge sidebar and Collections being gradually removed, resulting in an interface increasingly reminiscent of Chrome.
