Microsoft Edge has recently rolled out its version 142 to all users in the Stable channel, introducing a significantly upgraded password management system. This new enhancement allows Edge to save and synchronize passkeys across all your devices, streamlining the sign-in process to various websites while enhancing security.

Secure Passkey Storage

With the latest improvements, Microsoft Edge securely stores all passkeys within your Microsoft Account, protected by a dedicated Microsoft Password Manager PIN. This PIN is required at the time of creating your first passkey. Once set up, Edge will automatically suggest generating passkeys for compatible websites. For existing passkeys, users can authenticate their identity using Windows Hello, which supports fingerprint, facial recognition, or PIN authentication.

Current Limitations and Future Prospects

As of now, the functionality to save and synchronize passkeys is exclusive to Windows PCs. Users must operate on Windows 10 or newer, and have Microsoft Edge version 142 or above, as well as a Microsoft Account to utilize these features. However, Microsoft is committed to expanding passkey capabilities to other platforms in the future. Additionally, users can expect a dedicated plugin soon, which will facilitate the use of Edge-stored passkeys in third-party applications and browsers.

Continued Support for Traditional Passwords

Importantly, Microsoft assures that Edge’s password manager continues to fully support traditional passwords alongside the new passkey feature. While passkeys offer a modern and more secure authentication method—including becoming the default for new accounts—users who prefer traditional passwords can still log in without any disruptions. The introduction of passkeys does not compromise existing password functionalities.
